Abidal's cousin asked to do tests after kidney transplant (Cadena SER)

The case surrounding Eric Abidal's cousin and his kidney transplant remains very much open. The procecutor's office, as revealed by Cadena SER Catalunya, have sent an investigation order to Lyon as they want Abidal's cousin, Gerard, to undergo medical tests.

Those tests have to be voluntarily accepted by the donor as, according to French law, he can't be tried and can only appear as a witness. If he accepts, a French doctor will check whether the operation actually happened and examination can take place via a video conference.

The investigation is related to accusations of an illegal transplant taking place. Abidal needed a kidney transplant in 2012 and the case also focuses on the hospital which performed the operation, the Hospital Clínic in Barcelona.

It's worth remembering that the case was re-opened in Barcelona last January. This all stems from a telephone call, intercepted by the police, between Sandro Rosell and an associate, where it's claimed they knowlingly spoke about the kidney operation being illegal.

Gerard Abidal was quizzed heavily before the operation took place. Usually these operations take place between immediate family members but this was with his cousin. They did rule out any irregularities when it came to consent as Gerard accidently wrote his signature over his name rather than under it.

Now Gerard must decide whether he wants to undergo further tests to determine whether he actually gave one of his kidneys to his cousin Eric - and whether that happen legally.
