Alan Shearer stuns Micah Richards with his top 10 best pundits list

Alan Shearer hilariously left Micah Richards stunned as he named his top 10 best football pundits.

The two former Premier League stars were tasked with ranking a handful of the best analysts – past and present – on the Match of the Day podcast by Gary Lineker, while both of their lists had to include themselves.

Sportsmail columnist Richards was asked to name his 10th pick all the way down to his sixth, with the late Jimmy Hill his first selection.

As Richards reeled off his next few picks, Shearer's name was nowhere to be seen meaning he rated the Newcastle legend highly as a pundit.

Hilarity then ensued when it came to Shearer's turn to name the bottom half of his top 10.

'I'm feeling guilty now,' Shearer admitted after finding out he was in Richards' top five best football pundits.

As Lineker pressed Shearer for his 10th pick, the Premier League's all-time record goalscorer bluntly said: 'Micah, ten.'

A stunned Richards was sent into a fit of laughter, before Lineker jokingly added: 'I wouldn't have put you ten, I wouldn't have done that to you – I wouldn't have had you in the list.'

The mood changed when Shearer was asked to reveal his picks for the ninth and eighth positions on his list, with Richards' Sky Sports colleagues Roy Keane and Jamie Carragher taking the next two spots above him.

Richards, still reeling from being placed bottom of Shearer's list, added: 'This is personal now.'

Shearer's decision to put fan favourite Carragher eighth left Richards with his hands on his head before he blurted out a swear word in disbelief.

Richards then jokingly accused Shearer of bias, saying his top five are all BBC pundits, before Lineker reminded him that he is, in fact, bottom of the list.

Richards placed both Keane and Carragher in his top three, with the Liverpool legend taking top spot for his punditry on Sky Sports.

They pair both agreed that Gary Neville deserved to be in the top three, with Shearer placing him third while he took second best pundit on Richards' list.

'I think with Gary Neville, with the whole Super League thing… I always look at how pundits react when there's breaking news,' Richards said.

'In breaking news moments he's one of the best around. He's articulate, he's passionate, and he speaks a lot of sense - the majority of the time!'

Arsenal legend and BBC pundit Ian Wright took top spot in Shearer's list, with Lineker sincerely adding: 'He'll (Wright) be chuffed with that.'

Shearer and Keane had a long-running feud during their playing days and famously almost came to blows during a Premier League match in 2001, when Newcastle faced Manchester United at St James' Park.

Keane was goaded by Shearer with the Magpies leading 4-3 late on, which saw the Irishman lash out and swing a punch at the former Newcastle skipper.

The incident saw Keane sent off, with Shearer admitting years later that he did the Manchester United captain like a 'kipper'.

'Yeah, I didn't like him,' Shearer said on a Match of the Day podcast in 2020. 'I had loads of rucks with him and I wasn't the only one. It was a throw-in in the far corner where I stopped him taking an early throw.

'We were beating them at St. James' and he wanted to take a quick throw-in and he'd been at me all game as he normally was.

'It was about three of four minutes before the end of the game. I can't remember exactly what I said, I called him some sort of name.

'He got the red card and I remember having a little smile and thought: 'I've done you [like] a kipper here'. I can't believe you've fallen into that little trap.'

But that wasn't the end of it, as Keane looked for revenge by waiting in the tunnel to get to Shearer after the full-time whistle following Newcastle's victory.

Shearer added: 'And I can see him, the steam was coming out of his ears, and then the final whistle goes and I'm thinking, "Do I run straight off? Do I try and get up there?" Because I knew for a fact that Roy would be waiting at the top of the tunnel.

'So I don't know, I say thanks and shake hands and what have you and there's this big commotion going on and I look up and there's Roy, he's waiting for me at the top of the tunnel.'
