Diego Simeone's side were controversially denied a goal in the shootout, despite Julian Alvarez finding the back of the net for Atletico's second penalty.
His shot was ruled a miss because the ball ricocheted off his left foot after he initially kicked it with his right.
As per the FA's website, one of the rules of football when taking a penalty kick states: 'The kicker must not play the ball again until it has touched another player.'
In a penalty shootout, this rule is altered, as the kick-taker cannot make contact with the ball at all after it initially leaves their boot (as this would allow players to score rebounds).

Athletico didn’t protest because they know the rule,I don’t know why simple English is so hard for ppl to understand,he shot the ball with his right foot which hit his left foot before going in which is a double play,if it was in the match then I think I would be a retake,but since it’s a shootout the rules is there it’s a miss cus he already took it with his right which only went in because it hit his left,so what’s so hard to understand here,even Alvarez admitted it to his coach

let me tell you something, when Var is in favor of Real Madrid, everyone says oh it's cheating, it's robbery, that's how they always win, that's how they won so many UCL. but if Var is against Real Madrid as we saw in so many la Liga matches this season, everyone start saying now let them taste of their own medicines, now they should now how it feels cheating blah blah. so actually what do you guys wants 😂.
