Antony branded 'Sir Fidget Spinner' following winger's 'useless' performance

Antony has been criticised by Manchester United fans on social media after the club suffered a ignominious European exit on Tuesday.

United needed to defeat Bayern Munich at Old Trafford to have any chance of progressing from Group A but ultimately fell to a 1-0 defeat courtesy of a second-half strike from Kingsley Coman.

The result marked the club's earliest exit from a European competition since the last time they failed to progress beyond the group stage, when they finished fourth in a Champions League group containing Villarreal, Benfica, and Lille in the 2005/06 season.

Defeat has also cast doubt on Erik ten Hag's future at the club, with reports from Spain claiming former Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui is 'well placed' to succeed the Dutchman in the Old Trafford dugout if Ten Hag is sacked.

Though he demonstrated some promising glimpses in the early going, Antony struggled to make an impact against Bayern and received scathing criticism for his performance post-match.

L'Equipe ranked the Brazilian as United's worst player in the game earning a 3/10 for his performance, with only Ten Hag himself graded as harshly by the French publication.

Fans on also took aim at a clip from the game that circulated widely on social media showing the former Ajax winger attempting to find his way past Bayern's Alphonso Davies before failing to claim a return pass from Diogo Dalot.

One branded the £85.5m signing 'Sir Fidget Spinner'.

A further fan questioned what Antony contributed to the team: Definitely the most useless RW I’ve seen in my lifetime, what does he do?'

Another added: 'That's amazing. I mean look how he manages all of that unimpressive ball work and still ends up going nowhere.'

A further fan wrote: '12 touches, 0cm gain, possession lost - would be better to kick the ball out.'

However, other users argued that the blame for that passage of play did not lay at the 23-year-old's feet.

One wrote: 'That’s actually not his fault? Goes for a one two and a bad pass back.'

Another agreed: 'It's very dangerous commenting a whole player's performance based on a single clip. He did alright before Dalot came to the LB, at least he was better than most of them.'

Antony has yet to register a goal or assist in 17 appearances across all competitions in his second season at Old Trafford.
