Arteta provides worrying Martinelli injury update after Arsenal win vs Everton

Gabriel Martinelli had a goal ruled out against Everton before the Arsenal star had to be substituted with a muscle injury in the first half

Mikel Arteta has provided a worrying update on Gabriel Martinelli after the 22-year-old was substituted during Arsenal's 1-0 win against Everton at Goodison Park. Martinelli was forced off with a hamstring problem after he received treatment shortly after he thought he had opened the scoring against Everton.

The Brazil international was replaced by Leandro Trossard - with the Belgian forward scoring the decisive goal later in the game. Martinelli headed straight down the tunnel before reappearing on the bench shortly afterwards.

Martinelli has a strong record when it comes to avoiding injury in the last couple of years, missing just five games for Arsenal since he returned from a major knee problem in December 2020. In June 2020, the youngster sustained cartilage damage in his left knee during training at London Colney.

Speaking after the win against Everton, Arteta offered a brief update on Martinelli's condition. The Gunners boss told Sky Sports: "He [Martinelli] felt something, he felt it in his hammy [hamstring] so he will need to be assessed."

It is unclear on how severe the injury is, but Martinelli is now a doubt ahead of Arsenal's Champions League group stage campaign and the highly anticipated North London Derby next weekend. Thomas Partey is another key player that remains on the sidelines as he recovers from a groin injury sustained before the recent international break.
