Athletic Club's Williams is playing at Griezmann's level

Athletic Club are enjoying a season of two halves, with their own relegation battle having turned into an opportunity to qualify for the Champions League, and they have Inaki Williams to thank with the Spanish forward playing at the same level as Antoine Griezmann.

Across the five major European leagues, only Lionel Messi has scored more goals than Williams over the course of the last month.

He has netted five goals over the period of time between victories against Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano, and the only team to shut the forward out has been Getafe.

Statistics are often easy to manipulate but, in this case, the 24-year-old has been as important to his team as Griezmann has to Los Colchoneros.

Both players have earned their team a grand total of 13 league points courtesy of their goals, a figure that is only bettered by the 15 points gained by Messi and Cristhian Stuani.

Athletic Club made the shrewd move to extend the player's contract until June 2025, and his buyout clause is expected to reach 108 million euros by the end of that contract.

Interestingly, in relation to the upcoming summer, the Basque club are acutely aware that Williams' buyout clause will stand at 88 million euros for the 2019/20 season, a figure that in an inflated market could appear more and more attractive.
