Bergomi: I think Mourinho would be the correct choice

Italy is in crisis after failing to reach the World Cup. Coach Gian Piero Ventura is likely to jump or be pushed from his position, although he has not retired yet.

Giuseppe Bergomi, champion of the world with Italy in the Spain 1982 World Cup, commented on the programme Tutti Convocati de Radio 24 that he wants Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho to be offered the job in his stead.

"Italian football needs a deep reconstruction. I ask myself if we are still a great football power or not. In terms of the coach, I think Mourinho would be the correct choice. He might seem like someone who provokes, but some would say the same about Roberto Mancini. In the short term the best thing to do would be to pick an important coach, who can take on two roles," said Bergomi.

However Italians want another coach. The favourite for the job is Carlo Ancelotti, although Gazzetta say his signing is "quite improbable, but not impossible."

The former Madrid and Bayern coach is currently out of work but he wants to continue - albeit at a club. Other options on the table are Massimiliano Allegri, Roberto Mancini and Chelsea's Antonio Conte.
