Manchester United earned a 3-1 victory over Brentford on Wednesday night, but they didn't have it all their own way at Brentford Community Stadium.

After David de Gea twice denied Vitaly Janelt in the first half, goals from Anthony Elanga, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford in the second half put the Red Devils into a commanding position, even if Ivan Toney pulled one back for the home side.

In the first half, it was Brentford, and Janelt specifically, who came closer to scoring. De Gea had to make two good saves to deny the German, sticking out a strong leg on both occasions. On the latter, Victor Lindelof was vital too to deflect Toney's follow-up wide.

Having survived the first half, Manchester United made Brentford pay for their wastefulness at the beginning of the second period.

After Cristiano Ronaldo directed a header off the crossbar, United then went ahead in the 55th minute when Elanga finished after being picked out by Fred.

Shortly afterwards, in the 62nd minute, a Ronaldo chest pass released Bruno Fernandes and he set up Greenwood for the finish.

The visitors were in control and sealed the deal in the 78th minute when Fernandes produced another assist, this time to set up Rashford for his first goal since October.

Although Toney scored a late consolation goal, it was a 3-1 victory for Manchester United, who keep pace with their rivals for Champions League qualification.
