Burnley have held further talks over an improved contract for defender James Tarkowski as the club moves closer to agreement on a takeover.

Americans ALK Capital, fronted by Alan Pace, are in pole position to buy the Turf Moor club and the deal could see current chairman Mike Garlick remain place until the end of the season.

Burnley staff are keen for continuity to maintain stability amid the takeover and hope new contracts can be reached with key players.

Tarkowski, a target for West Ham, has rejected two offers so far and said he did not intend to sign a new deal with his current contract expiring in 2022.

The 28-year-old has been keen to move on to further his England ambitions and saw projected moves to West Ham and Leicester fall through in the last transfer window owing to Burnley's £35m valuation.

However, Burnley are maintaining dialogue with Tarkowski's camp and want to tie up two of their younger players too, highly-rated defender Jimmy Dunne, 23, and midfielder Josh Benson, 21.

Manager Sean Dyche has been frustrated in the past with contract issues undermining his plans going forward.
