Carlo Ancelotti lifts lid on reasons behind tea-blowing celebration to Bernard's extra-time winner

One of the iconic moments of the season so far arrived in midweek when ultra cool Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti nonchalantly carried on drinking his tea after Bernard had netted what turned out to be the winner against Tottenham in their FA Cup tie.

But the Italian insisted it was simply the freezing temperatures at Goodison Park and doubt about whether Everton's fifth goal of the fifth-round fixture would stand that ensured he remained so calm despite the euphoria around him.

Brazilian Bernard netted in the first half of extra time as the Toffees beat Spurs in a nine-goal thriller to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Wednesday.

Shortly afterwards, cameras showed the former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich boss blowing on his tea immediately after the goal had gone in and his composed reaction went viral on social media.

But the 61-year-old said a subsequent VAR check - to see if Bernard was offside when Gylfi Sigurdsson clipped the ball into his path - as well as the bitterly cold weather leaving him unable to speak were the reasons behind his muted celebration.

'I was drinking tea because I was freezing, and after 90 minutes I was not able to talk because I was really cold,' Ancelotti said in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Premier League visit of Fulham on Sunday.

'I asked for a cup of tea and when Bernard scored the goal, I didn't celebrate for two reasons.

'I had the cup of tea in my hand and secondly I did not know it it was allowed or not because there was a check for offside.

'I was calm and cool for this reason, but first of all it was so cold.'

Toffees assistant manager Duncan Ferguson laughed at the Italian's cool reaction, claiming it was the result of his vast managerial experiences at some of Europe's most decorated sides.

There was however more serious news to emerge from the Tottenham victory, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin taken off in the second half.

The England striker will miss Sunday's game against Fulham but could well be available in midweek against Manchester City, who are also the side the Toffees will face in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup next month.
