Champions League winners Liverpool WILL take part in the Club World Cup

Liverpool will have the opportunity to play for the status of being the world's best team this December with the venue of the next FIFA Club World Cup to be decided on Monday.

Jurgen Klopp's side were crowned champions of Europe for the sixth time in their history when they beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in Madrid on Saturday night.

That earned them a place in the Club World Cup later this year and Liverpool fans will know a few more details by the end of Monday.

The venue for the competition will be decided at a meeting of the FIFA Council at the Hotel Salomon de Rothschild in Paris at 3pm.

FIFA like to vary the host country of the competition, which brings together the various continental champions from across the globe each year.

It has been staged in the United Arab Emirates for the past two years but has also been hosted by Japan, Morocco and Brazil since its inception in 2000.

Liverpool's participation means they'll be in seven different competition next season and it will likely cause some disruption to their domestic fixture list in December.

They will take part in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and EFL Cup.

After finishing second in the Premier League table, the Reds will play champions and FA Cup holders Manchester City in the curtain-raising FA Community Shield at Wembley in August.

They will also play UEFA Europa League winners Chelsea for the UEFA Super Cup at Besiktas' Vodafone Park in Istanbul on August 14.

And they'll also be in the Club World Cup, a competition they last competed in back in 2005, when they lost 1-0 to Brazilian club Sao Paulo in the final in Japan.

Liverpool's Champions League win on Saturday means that four of the seven Club World Cup participants have now been confirmed.

Tunisian side Esperance de Tunis will represent Africa after their victory over Moroccans Wydad Casablanca in the CAF Champions League final last week.

North American will be represented by Mexican club Monterrey, who beat compatriots UANL 2-1 on aggregate to win the CONCACAF Champions League last month.

And Oceania will be represented by the New Caledonian club Hienghene Sport, who beat fellow countrymen Magenta 1-0 to win the OFC Champions League.

Two places will go to the winners of the South American Copa Libertadores and the Asian AFC Champions League, both to be determined in November.

And the seventh and final place will go to the winners of the league in whichever host country FIFA selects on Monday.

Liverpool will enter the Club World Cup at the semi-final stage, meaning they will play two matches at the tournament - the semi-final and either the final or the third place play-off.

Real Madrid have been crowned world champions for the past three seasons. They defeated the Emirati club Al Ain 4-1 to retain the trophy in Abu Dhabi last December.

FIFA had intended to announce the host venue at their last Council meeting back in March but the decision was delayed, causing confusion as to whether there would be a tournament this year.

However, at that same meeting, FIFA members rubber-stamped a proposal to expand and revamp the Club World Cup to a 24-team tournament from 2021.

The competition will be played during the international match calendar slot that was occupied by the FIFA Confederations Cup, a test event for World Cup hosts a year out from the finals.

The first of the 24-team tournaments has been pencilled in for June 17 to July 4, 2021 and would have eight groups of three with the winners advancing to the quarter-finals.

FIFA wanted 12 of the teams to come from Europe to boost the tournament's profile but met objections from UEFA, who see the competition as a threat to the Champions League.

If these plans come to fruition, it means Liverpool's crack at world glory will come in the penultimate edition of the Club World Cup as we presently know it.

Liverpool will inevitably face fixture congestion as a result of taking part.

Last year's tournament ran from December 12-22 and if such a date was replicated, Liverpool would have to reschedule two Premier League games as well as a potential EFL Cup quarter-final.
