All eyes were on Jose Mourinho at the London Stadium as the former Chelsea and Manchester United man took charge of Tottenham for the first time.
As was only to be expected the Portuguese cut an animated figure as he watched his new charges claim a 3-2 victory.
Here, Sportsmail takes a forensic look at his day as he returned to Premier League action.
10.30am (approx) – Mourinho arrives at the stadium smiling as he leads his staff and players off the team coach. He shake hands with a line of young mascots and goes back to fist bump one or two he has missed out. Can't stop smiling on his journey to the dressing room.
11.30am – Teams are announced and he has gone with the 4-2-3-1 formation that brought Mauricio Pochettino so much joy in his first few seasons. Eric Dier, once a target for him at Man Utd, is back for a rare outing in midfield, sitting alongside Harry Winks. Toby Alderweireld is the only one of Tottenham's 'contract rebels' to make the team – Christian Eriksen and Danny Rose are on the bench, Jan Vertonghen is injured.
12.25pm – Mourinho walks out after his team take to the pitch before kickoff, takes his seat on the away team benches with a phalanx of photographers all focused on him.
Kick-off – Starts sitting on the benches alongside his new number two Joao Sacramento
3mins – Harry Kane scores but is flagged offside. Mourinho jumps up and out into his technical area for the first time before taking his seat again
6mins – Mourinho is up and back in the technical area, assisting the referee by waving an imaginary flag to suggest a Spurs throw in. Michal Oliver agrees and gives the marginal call to Tottenham. Jose spends the rest of the half prowling across the technical area with hands in pockets
7mins – Briefly walks back to his seat, and fails to see West Ham miss a good chance to take the lead when Haller's header is straight into Paolo Gazzaniga's hands from close range.
17mins – Orders Lucas Moura and Heung Min Son to switch flanks.
32mins – Helps himself to a drink from the cooler box during a quiet passage of play.
37mins – Son scores and Mourinho allows himself a double fist pump – then gets a hug from assistant Joao Sacramento, who had been out earlier to suggest a tactical tweak.
40mins – Short break in play while Son is treated for injury, so he calls over left-back Ben Davies for a word.
42mins – Back to his seat briefly.
43mins – Moura doubles the lead and a more animated celebration from Jose this time; down on one knee, fists pumping.
45+2mins – Disappears down the tunnel before the end of stoppage time to prepare for his half-time team talk, and fails to see Spurs goes close twice through Davinson Sanchez and Dier.
HALF TIME
46mins – Mourinho starts the second half back in the technical area, prowling his technical area with hands deep in pockets.
48mins – Moura misses a sitter but Mourinho hardly reacts, apart from a rueful smile
49mins – Harry Kane scores to make it 3-0, but Mourinho ignores the Spurs players celebrating at one end of the pitch and tries to get the attention of keeper Gazzaniga at the other end. The keeper doesn't hear him, so Mourinho calls over Harry Winks to give him lengthy instructions, which Winks then relays to his team-mates.
50mins – Some concern as Kane needs treatment for an ankle injury and Mourinho has a chat with the physio when he returns. Mourinho speaks to Kane briefly before he returns to the field.
71mins – Kane laid out again, by when a fierce free-kick hits him in the head, and Mourinho uses the break to discuss substitutions with his staff.
73mins – Michail Antonio pulls a goal back for West Ham and Ben Davies is injured in the process, so Rose goes on as sub. Mourinho high-fives Davies as he walks off.
79mins – Dele Alli, who looks back to his old self again, is replaced by Eriksen and gets a handshake and a pat on the back from Mourinho, who must be delighted by the England man's return to form.
86mins – Dust-up close to the technical areas as Robert Snodgrass and Kane clash. Handful of players square up, Mourinho steps on to the edge of the pitch but does not get involved. Has a quiet word with Eriksen over tactics instead.
89mins – West Ham think they have scored again, but VAR spots Declan Rice in an offside position and rules out the goal. Mourinho goes over for a chat with Manuel Pellegrini during the brief break in play.
90+3mins – Mourinho is still giving instructions from the sidelines during six minutes of stoppage time. Gets more animated when Angelo Ogbonna makes it 2-3 in the final seconds before final whistle goes.
90+6mins – Final whistle. 2-3 to Spurs. Mourinho shakes hands with Pellegrini. Gives Dele Alli a hug before walking out on to the pitch to shake hands with a few West Ham players and the officials.
Then hugs his players one by one, keeping his distance from those celebrating with the fans at one end. Applauds the fans more than once, and gets a round of applause back from them at the end, as he is the last man off the pitch and down the tunnel.

Mourinho have never coach a club without lifting a trophy. Tottenham management are wise enough and so hungry for a trophy. But much thanks to porch for taking the team to this standard.

I enjoy seeing Mou happy. When he’s happy half the football world isn’t, the other half is but ALL of the football world notices. The Special One.

I know the entire news tomorrow will be about Mourinho. He loves EPL so much, because they give him the kind of environment that he enjoys the most, with all the media hype, controversy, war of words and so on! I must also say that this is his opportunity to prove himself once again as one of the best coaches of the game.
