Tuesday’s fiery clash saw emotions boil over, bringing about a heated exchange between Dortmund star Jude Bellingham and Chelsea defenders Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella
Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell has sent a message to teammates Marc Cucurella and Ruben Loftus-Cheek after the trio were involved in a confrontation with Jude Bellingham at Stamford Bridge. The incident came during Chelsea’s clash with Borussia Dortmund as Graham Potter’s side progressed to the Champions League quarter-finals at the Germans’ expense.
Having established a 2-1 lead on aggregate, the Blues provided a masterclass in running down the clock and seeing out the win by any means necessary. The visitors were clearly getting frustrated by some of the dark arts on show, leading to emotions boiling over for some.
Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham was at the thick of the action, just hours after a meeting between his dad and a Real Madrid chief in London had emerged. Late into the second-half, the England international was embroiled in a tussle with Chelsea contingent Cucurella, Chilwell and Loftus-Cheek, alongside Dortmund’s Emre Can and Marius Wolf.
Taking to Instagram, Chilwell demonstrated the unity and camaraderie among the squad with a cheeky message to the other two involved in the incident. Two of the protagonists have often been competing for the same position this season, but Potter found a way to incorporate both into the starting line-up by playing Chilwell at left wing-back and Cucurella on the left-hand side of a back-three.
Chilwell tagged the other two in an Instagram Story which featured a photo of all three going head-to-head with the men in yellow. He captioned the image with the message “My bro’s”, followed by a blue heart and crying with laughter emoji.
Enzo Fernandez and Kalidou Koulibaly consoled the 19-year-old, standing between him and Cucurella, with the pair seeming to exchange a few words. Minutes later, Bellingham was then seen throwing his water bottle onto the pitch before pushing a TV camera away.
"From where I was it was really close," Bellingham said. "I’m not really sure what more he [Marius Wolf] can do with the hands too but - oh, let’s have a look.
"I mean yeah, it’s a yard or two away, I’m not so sure. I don’t want to get in trouble, I’ve paid enough to them lot so that in itself was disappointing and the fact they’ve had a retake is a joke.
"I think for every penalty, especially for one with such a slow run-up, there’s going to be people encroaching into the box by a yard or so but that’s the game I suppose, he’s made a decision and we’ll have to live with it."
