Bayern Munich are reportedly at an impasse with star defender David Alaba, with wage demands said to be the obstacle standing between a contract renewal.

Alaba, 28, has been a mainstay in the Bayern team since breaking through in 2010, and has developed into one of the most accomplished players in European football.

Eyeing up a lucrative extension in Bavaria, Alaba and his representatives are said to be at a stalemate due to Bayern's unwillingness to offer collective wages exceeding €20million (£18m), according to Bild.

This news, in turn, has set Manchester City and Paris Saint Germain on red alert.

City boss Guardiola worked with Alaba during his time in the Bundesliga, and is known to be a big admirer of his many verstatile talents.

Bild report that the player's agent is now 'threatening the scenario of a free transfer' when Alaba's contract comes to an end next summer.

Should Bayern feel an agreement with the player is not possible, they could be forced to sell for a reduced fee in the coming weeks.

Alaba, who can play across the back line and in defensive midfield, had struck up a partnership with Jerome Boateng during the recently concluded 2019/20 campaign.

City have made no secret of their quest to sign a defender this summer, to pair alongside Aymeric Laporte.

Both Kalidou Koulibaly of Napoli and Bournemouth's Nathan Ake have been linked with the Etihad in recent weeks.

Alaba both starred in and scored in the final game of the Bundesliga season, hitting the back of the net after 16 minutes in the DFB Pokal final against Bayer Leverkusen.

Bayern went on to win the match 4-2, adding the domestic trophy to yet another Bundesliga league title.
