Del Bosque: Casillas is one of our heroes

Former Spain and Real Madrid coach Vicente del Bosque has lauded goalkeeper Iker Casillas as one of the Spain's footballing heroes and has wished him a speedy recovery after he underwent heart surgery.

Casillas was a key part of both Spain and Real Madrid's success over the last decade, and thankfully has now been discharged from hospital

"He is one of our heroes," Del Bosque said.

"A player who has pretty much played out his entire career at the same club and has always behaved impeccably.

Del Bosque, who was taking part in a conference at the University of Alicante says that although he has not yet spoken face-to-face with Casillas, he has sent him a message.

Casillas' former coach says that he is not in the least bit surprised that he has received so many messages of support from supporters and fellow professionals alike.

"He is a player who has earned such huge respect due to his behaviour both on and off the field," Del Bosque went on.

"At the end of the day, the most important thing is that Casillas is healthy.

"Everyone's footballing days have to come to an end at some point, what is important is that he goes on to live a long, healthy life.

The former Real Madrid coach did reserve a few words of praise for the current state of Spanish football, with special recognition going to both Barcelona and Valencia, who are flying the flag for Spain in both European competitions.

"Barcelona are in a fantastic position and we wish both of our Spanish representatives the best of luck," he continued.

"It would be great for the Spanish game should both finales feature Spanish sides."
