Duncan Ferguson will relish taking on Manchester United again

Manchester United will come face-to-face with a familiar foe on Sunday as Duncan Ferguson brings his Everton side to Old Trafford.

Ferguson may only be in temporary charge but he stamped his authority all over the club he loves in last week's convincing victory over Chelsea.

The presence of Ferguson taking charge of the visiting dugout this weekend will conjure evocative memories for supporters of both sides.

Of Big Dunc swirling his blue shirt round his head to the delight of Goodison Park in 1995. And to his last goal against Sir Alex Ferguson and Co in 2005 - a header, just like the first, to give Everton a famous win.

And, of course, he was a significant part of the last Everton side to win a trophy, 24 years ago at the Old Wembley... against Manchester United.

It has been six years since Everton last won at Old Trafford, thanks to a late Bryan Oviedo goal to heap the pressure on their former manager David Moyes.

It was under Moyes that Ferguson scored the last of a staggering seven goals against Manchester United in his playing days. One of them was for Newcastle in an easy-to-forget 18-month spell there at the turn of the millennium.

Ferguson on his day was unplayable, and certainly when he was up for the occasion. He had many a memorable Merseyside derby moment, too.

But during Ferguson's playing days it was Manchester United who ruled the roost. His 58th minute header, one of five in total, proved the difference in February 1995.

And it proved costly for Manchester United, who went on to be pipped to the league title by Blackburn Rovers on the final day.

He was the scourge of United again in an early-season clash in August 1996. He turned and swiveled on the edge of the box to smash a thunderous left-footed drive into the top corner before scoring a trademark header.

However, United surged back in the second half to earn a draw.

Ferguson was again on target with a header from a corner in October 1998, but this time could not prevent United claiming a 4-1 win at Goodison Park.

It was to be a further six years before the Old Lady could celebrate a Ferguson goal against Manchester United. And it almost came as part of a memorable comeback.

United had leaped into a 3-0 lead within half-an-hour before Everton staged a second-half comeback.

David Unsworth began the recovery and Ferguson brought Everton back to within a goal, with yet another header from a corner. Kevin Kilbane equalised but Everton were undone by a late Ruud van Nistelrooy winner.

In April 2005 it was a free kick instead of a corner that supplied Ferguson with his final goal against United. With Everton chasing a top four finish, Ferguson terrorised his old foes, in a game which saw Gary Neville and Phil Scholes sent off.

He wriggled free of his marker to stoop low and head a Mikel Arteta past Tim Howard.

If Dominic Calvert-Lewin or Richarlison can do similar at the weekend, you can be sure there will be one delighted Scot in the Everton dugout.
