The details of a conversation between Erling Haaland and Phil Foden after Manchester City eliminated Borussia Dortmund from the Champions League at the quarter final stage have now been revealed.
Excitement had rippled across the City fanbase after Haaland and Foden warmly embraced at the end of the second-leg tie at the Eithad, in which the England international struck the decisive goal to send his boyhood club through to the last four.
Haaland and Foden were seen hugging and in deep conversation while covering their mouths with their hands, sparking speculation that Foden was urging his fellow European starlet to sign for Pep Guardiola's side next season.
Now, however, it has emerged that Haaland had congratulated Foden and made a joke about the midfielder scoring across both legs.
According to the Telegraph, Norwegian sensational Haaland told Foden: 'I’m the one who was supposed to score the goals.'
Foden was seen laughing as the duo parted, before walking separately down the tunnel.
City progressed at the expense of Haaland and Dortmund, and are now preparing to meet Paris Saint Germain in the semi-finals of the tournament.
As for Haaland, the bookmakers still place City firmly as frontrunners to be his next club for the coming campaign.
The Norwegian has a release clause which comes into play in the summer of 2022, though it is understood Dortmund are ready to cash in at the end of the current campaign in the hope of triggering a bidding war.
Haaland is valued in the region of £150million by his current employers.
The German club have lost millions as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, and risk having their funds further slashed next season with the potential of missing out on Champions League football.
Dortmund currently sit in 5th place in the Bundesliga table, four points adrift of Eintracht Frankfurt in 4th after 30 matches played.
City are on the hunt for an elite level goalscorer this summer, after it was confirmed that club legend Sergio Aguero will be moving on following the expiration of his contract.
