Former Manchester United player Nicky Butt is selling his multi-million pound mansion after his split from wife Shelley.

The veteran midfielder's home in the exclusive neighbourhood of Hale, Greater Manchester is on the market for £4.4 million.

The move comes just weeks after he was arrested for an alleged assault at the marital home and released on bail.

Butt, 44, who now heads Manchester United ’s academy, is reported to have moved out and is living in a flat nearby.

Wife Shelley, who split with the footballer last year, has continued to live at the house in Hale, Greater Manchester, with their two children.

A sales brochure described the vast home as a 'handsome detached residence', boasting six bedrooms, triple garage, swimming pool and space for a small football pitch.

The couple, who wed in 2008, paid £4.4million for the house in 2007.

The home in nestled in one of the area's most sought-after streets, with Butt's next door neighbour's 5-bed mansion going for £6,800,000 last year.

Butt split with wife Shelley Barlow, 44, after 11 years of marriage last year.

A neighbour told The Sun at the time: 'Nicky and Shelley decided it couldn't work last year. It's obviously a very difficult time for everyone and it seems tensions might have boiled over.'

But on April 16 police were called to reports of assault at the family home.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said: 'Police were called at around 2pm on Tuesday 16 April 2019 to reports that a woman had been assaulted at a house on Broadway, Hale.

'The woman received a small cut to her hand and does not require hospital treatment.

'A 44–year-old was arrested on suspicion of assault and has been bailed pending further inquiries.'

Lawyers for Butt released a statement on Wednesday afternoon saying: 'Mr Butt strongly denies any allegations or suggestions of an assault and will continue to co-operate and assist the police with their ongoing investigations.'

Manchester United said that it would not suspend Butt, who has strongly protested his innocence following his arrest on suspicion of assault.

Butt was part of Man Utd’s famous Class of ’92 that dominated the Premier League under coach Sir Alex Ferguson and winning dozens of pieces of silverware.

He is still the head of the Manchester United academy and also co-owner of Salford City FC along with other former Man United players.
