CONMEBOL have put forward a proposal to Fifa arguing that the World Cup should take place every two years rather than four, president Alejandro Dominguez Wilson-Smith has confirmed.
While there have been discussions about expanding the Uefa Nations League to South American countries, and the latter are open to that, the federation chief has put on the table an alternative suggestion that the World Cup changes its cycle.
It was an idea previously raised by former Fifa president Sepp Blatter, only to be dismissed at the time, but Dominguez argues that the change would make sense both economically for the game and in terms of players’ careers, as they would have more opportunities to appear in the sport’s great showpiece.
The proposal was tabled at the Fifa congress in Kigali last month.
“I always say we have to work together and never say ‘no’, I always say ‘why not?’” Dominguez said in an interview ahead of Saturday’s Copa Libertadores final in Buenos Aires. “By saying that, we always will support an idea like that, or a proposal like we have done to Fifa, to do the World Cup every two years and not every four.
“Instead of having a Nations League in between, we can just go ahead every year and do a World Cup that is for everyone, for the players because at the moment sometimes they could play four World Cups if we move to a two-year cycle. If we stay with this format, many players could not play more than two.
“So we see an opportunity there and there is a proposal put forward to Fifa to take it over and say whether it is a global Nations League or is there an opportunity to play World Cup every two years. I would say there are many other solutions, we can move to Europe, Africa, Asia, North America, South America (without such a long wait). In terms of economics, I would say Fifa could make money, to give more money.”

We are talking the world cup here. the dream of every player. there should be honor to it, I don't buy the idea of 2years. it will affect whole lot of things. it will affect all the National leagues every year, time for the qualifier, then the game, the following year playing qualifier again then the world cup. dammit, it lost it's savour and the thirst will reduce. if possible enlogate the years, so you know as a star player, you have few chances of showing on that platform in your career.

I'm not sure this would work at all, if FIFA decides to play world's cup every 2 years, there will be not enough time for country hosting world's cup to prepare, especially when it comes to constructing a stadium, building extra hotels, preparations of entertainment facilities and lot more, If FIFA force to do so, i will say.. it's another big gate open for corruption. My views.

I really appreciate the proposal. but at the moment I think it is not a big deal. I know that people would like to see their players taking many chances of earning the grand trophy. it would be a boring competition, people would be sick of it. other competition like euro, can, cope American could be compromised. definitely it's a bad idea. I bet in three years circle

Mere thinking that after one tournament is over, it's another Four years before you can experience another one is why the World Cup looks more attractive and More of a Meaningful tournament than the rest. The Olympics would have been in the same level, but everyone knows what the World Cup means to Players who wants to Write their names in the long list of "The Greatest of all Time". This definitely makes sense, you can imagine the depression it will save players like the beautiful Messi and mighty Ronaldo in players will give more in their clubs, they'll have a higher quality. Prospects will also get better chances. The irony is that it won't affect just the World Cup but every domestic league in the world. Eg Nigerian and Chilean leagues which are currently in shambles

Every two years? That will definitely have negative impact on global club football as well as the quality of the world cup itself. It will affect consistency of most membet countries because there won't be adequate time to prepare. Smaller or poorer countries will also suffer from making available the adequate resources to execute their plans. There may be a few advantages such as opportunity for players and countries to feature in the world cup as many times as posdible in their career, or a given period. Countries that are in better shape, big or small, have a chance to make it over those that may have some political challenges (e.g. FA) or most of their key players are injured-no enough time to treat and return. Three years could be more like it. Two years is too bogus ambition and selfish for fifa.

This idea is the most wisest, there are some players that don't have the chance to play two world cup in their career and they have the zeal to participate and to showcase what they've gat for the world but due to it being after four years some might lose interest and start to be performing woefully during the years that will make them not to be called up for their national job, if this could be accepted it'll save many players career and football would be very interesting more again.
