Fans take aim at Jamie Carragher for leaving Fikayo Tomori out of his World Cup squad

Jamie Carragher named who he had would take to Qatar for this year's World Cup with Gareth Southgate set to announce his final 26-man squad on Thursday.

Much of Carragher's squad appears likely to match up with whom Southgate decides to take, however one name omitted from his list appeared to infuriate supporters on social media.

Fikayo Tomori played himself back into Southgate's plans last season with a series of strong performances as AC Milan marched to their first Scudetto but has struggled at times this including against his former club, Chelsea, in the Champions League.

Despite this, various supporters remain in the belief that he should be a key part of Southgate's plans this winter.

'You can’t take [Conor] Coady, [Harry] Maguire and [Eric] Dier but leave Tomori out. AC Milan might not play in England, but they exist,' one user wrote.

Another sarcastically noted that Carragher was supposed to be thought of highly in the punditry sphere.

'This guy is supposed to be a knowledgeable pundit... Yet doesn't include Tomori who is England's best centre-back and was one of the reasons Milan won the title, as well as including [Kalvin] Phillips who's played 160 mins for City this season,' they wrote.

Others agreed: 'Carragher is a mug, Maguire over Tomori? Dumb as hell.'

Another accused the former Liverpool defender of committing an 'unforgivable crime' in picking Maguire and Coady over Tomori.

'Maguire and Coady ahead of Tomori is an unforgivable crime,' they wrote.

Another pointed to a more general bias within the 'English media' towards Tomori, an accusation that has been levelled at pundits - and Southgate himself - in the past.

'The bias that english media has against Tomori is actually criminal,' they wrote.

One other, perhaps more in jest, pointing to the incident involving Cristiano Ronaldo not shaking Carragher's hand earlier this season wrote: 'This is why Ronaldo do not rate you. Where is Tomori?'

Meanwhile, Carragher himself justified his selection by fighting back and saying that Tomori had not impressed him in either of AC Milan's games against Chelsea in the Champions League this season.

'The same fella who was all over the place against Chelsea twice? Yeah I’m not taking him.'
