Javier Hernandez produced a woeful Panenka miss in the 98th minute of LA Galaxy's 2-2 draw with Sporting Kansas City.
The former Manchester United striker struck twice in the game, including an 88th minute penalty to level matters at Dignity Health Sports Park.
The Mexican international had the chance to complete his hat-trick and seal a huge 3-2 victory.
The former West Ham United forward opened the scoring against Sporting KC with a cool finish in the fourth minute before second-half goals from Johnathon Russell and Felipe Hernandez put the visitors 2-1 up.
The 34-year-old then sent John Pulskamp the wrong way with his first penalty of the match and put it right into the top corner in the 88th minute.
Hernandez, however, massively over-complicated things with his second effort from 12 yards in the eighth minute of stoppage time.
The free-scoring striker, who has notched seven goals in seven games, went for a Panenka but telegraphed his attempt.
The ball went straight into the hands of Pulskamp - leaving Hernandez with his head in his hands.
Hernandez then apologised to the Galaxy hands after the match as well as putting his hands up to them with a prayer signal.
As he walked off the pitch moments later, he told LA Galaxy's fans: 'We had one clear chance to get the three points, we couldn't… I take responsibility, I'm sorry.
'Two weeks ago the Panenka worked really well, now this time it didn't work. I need to look forward, take responsibility and keep improving and working.'
Hernandez recently also hit headlines for a dive against Toronto FC, where he threw himself to the floor with remarkable exaggeration after a fracas with Michael Bradley, Richie Laryea and Chris Mavinga.
Galaxy are currently eighth in the western conference and return to action against Nashville on September 10, as they continue to chase down the play-off places.
