Former Norwich City striker Grant Holt has made his surprise wrestling debut by winning a 40-man Royal Rumble on Saturday evening.

The 37-year-old, who is currently still an academy coach at Carrow Road, hung up his boots last month to pursue a new career is the world of sports entertainment.

Holt has linked up with World Association of Wrestling (WAW) after originally signing a contract to fight at the company's Fightmare 3 event in 2019. However, the Canaries legend was fast-tracked through the system and came out to shock the event-goers  to enter the Royal Rumble event as the last man.

And it looked as if it was all over for Holt after entering the ring as entrant No 40.

With three other contestants left, it was every man for himself as one after another were eliminated from the event after being hauled over the top rope.

Holt had a close call after being thrown over the top rope before he managed to climb back into the ring to drop-kick his opponent out of the ring and get his wrestling career off to the best start possible.

However, Holt is already being lined up for another fight as he is set to join forces with UK wrestler Ricky Knight – father of WWE wrestler Paige.

Holt made made 154 appearances for the Canaries between 2009 and 2013 and also represented Nottingham Forest, Sheffield Wednesday and Wigan Athletic during his 19-year career in football.

He's not the first footballer to make the transition over to wrestling.

Stuart Tomlinson made the switch after leaving Burton Albion in 2013 and now goes by the name of Hugo Knox.

More recently, former Werder Bremen and Germany goalkeeper Tim Wiese fulfilled one of his dreams by going to wrestle with stars in the WWE.
