Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon defends Cristiano Ronaldo

Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has suggested it was a 'good thing' for Cristiano Ronaldo to force his way out of Manchester United.

Ronaldo left the club on Tuesday after having his contract terminated by mutual consent following a bombshell interview speaking out against the club and manager Erik ten Hag.

The interview has come under severe criticism, but Calderon, who was president of Madrid between 2006 and 2009, referenced Ronaldo's lack of playing time with the Red Devils as he defended the forward's actions.

'Cristiano might be coming to the end of his glorious career, but he remains a wonderful player', Calderon said, via the Mirror. 'It must have been so frustrating for him to not be in the team at Manchester United.

'United will have their reasons, of course, but someone of his stature in the game was never going to accept that. He has to be playing football. He has his pride and reputation to consider, so I think it's a good thing his time there has come to an end.'

Calderon stood down as president of Los Blancos after allegations of rigging votes to get the club's annual financial accounts approved.

He biggest move during his three years at the club was bringing Ronaldo to Spain for a then-world record £80million in 2009.

Ronaldo is now looking for a new side and reportedly offered his services to Real Madrid, with Chelsea also said to be interested in signing the forward.
