Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho deletes controversial gorilla tweet about Andre Onana
In the wake of Manchester United‘s crucial 1-0 victory over Copenhagen in the Champions League, Alejandro Garnacho, the club's young talent, has come under intense criticism for a controversial social media post, reported by GOAL. Following Andre Onana‘s match-winning penalty save, Garnacho posted a celebratory picture of Onana and his teammates along with two gorilla emojis. The emojis were swiftly removed, and the post was deleted after it sparked outrage on social media.
The incident has ignited concerns about racial insensitivity, and the Football Association (FA) is expected to investigate the matter. The FA has a precedent of taking a firm stance against racially sensitive posts on social media platforms. In recent years, both Edinson Cavani and Bernardo Silva faced disciplinary actions for their online conduct.
Cavani, a former Manchester United striker, was suspended for three matches in 2020 for using the term ‘Gracias Negrito' on Instagram, which, although intended as a friendly greeting, was deemed racially insensitive. Similarly, Bernardo Silva of Manchester City was banned for one match and fined £50,000 in 2019 for a racially charged tweet about his teammate, Benjamin Mendy.
Garnacho's post has reignited discussions about the responsibility of footballers on social media. The incident highlights the urgent need for ongoing education and awareness regarding racial sensitivity in the online sphere. As the football community closely observes how the FA handles this case, the episode serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and accountability in the digital age. Manchester United, for now, has chosen not to comment on the situation, leaving fans and pundits awaiting further developments.

To other AF comments here: So while calling a player a gorilla on the field it is racist, and labeling someone a gorilla here is a compliment to the players strength. I call BS on this. They are both patent examples of racism. Calling a player a gorilla whether on or off field, they are partaking in the evident and pervasive racist abuse rampant in the game as of now. I don’t like it at all

Onana is an indomitable lion so he would have used a Lion which also signifies strength not a gorilla which will now link the post now more to racism. It's rather unfortunate as he couldn't have meant what others are thinking now

Garnacho trying to call attention to himself because Onana and Maguire were the heroes. The terrible thing is that he calls attention through evident racism against his own teammates and all other players in the EPL, Morally reprehensible in my opinion and should have some consequences.

We love that icon as Africans to symbolize or strength and all. Every African uses that emoji. In Cameroon we call us #KONG the first musician to bring it to light is late DJ ARAFAT from ivory coast who is dead. He even sang about it and formed a wonderful dance move with it. Second follow by stanley enow a popular musician of Cameroon and the world at large uses the gorilla symbol before this guy from Nigeria called burna boy started using it lately. It's pride for Africans not racism. I'm sure Onana had told garnacho about it and with love he posted it but some people find it racist. Onana is the #KONG to die his greatness not an abuse please

this has no racist intention please look at the context...can one be insulting another in a win like saving a penalty? if you post a goat 🐐 sign on Messi or cr7 is it also racist ?
