The door hadn't even had time to swing shut behind Jose Mourinho at Tottenham's training ground when social media started piling in on the nature of his Spurs sacking.
Amid a relentless stream of outrage over plans to form a European Super League, where Tottenham would be a founder member, the north London club announced Mourinho's sacking on Monday just six days from the Carabao Cup final.
Match of the Day host Gary Lineker, a former Tottenham player, crowned Mourinho 'the first of the European Super League manager to lose their job' while another amusing take saw a reference to Tottenham's partnership with Dulux.
They announced Dulux as their official paint sponsor with pictures of the Dulux Dog at Tottenham's stadium.
But the Dulux Twitter account responded to remarks from fans bemoaning their fortunes on the pitch by mocking the club, including joking about selling an empty trophy cabinet.
But the majority of themes in the responses to the news from Tottenham supporters themselves were in reference to the club's grossly unpopular Super League plans.
'The last 24 hours have been embarrassing,' one fan raged on Twitter. 'You have turned us into a banter club.'
Another was pleased to see the back of Mourinho but the Super League meant joy was very much short-lived.
'17 months after most others would have sacked him,' they wrote. 'Can we play some positive football now? *until we get kicked out the league for joining this European rubbish'.
Another fan said the timing of Mourinho's sacking ruined his birthday.
'What an awful birthday present,' they said. 'Didn't think you could be any more Spursy. First you support this selfish league out of pure greed (we're not even European elite anyway) then you sack Jose less than a week before the final.
'I don't think I could be more disappointed in you.'
There were, of course, those fans willing to taunt Mourinho who has always been a polarising figure towards supporters at rival clubs.
An Arsenal fan responded to the news with a picture of Mourinho's infamous rant when the pressure was on at Manchester United, where he held up three fingers to represent the three Premier League title wins he has to his name.
But here, it was being used against him with the tweet saying: 'How many PL clubs have sacked you Jose?' in reference to his other departures from Chelsea and Manchester United
Tottenham announced Mourinho's exit just six days before the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley.
Chris Powell and Ryan Mason have replaced Mourinho as Spurs manager from now until the end of the season.
RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann and Leicester's Brendan Rodgers are among the early contenders to replace Mourinho at Spurs.
