Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher walk out midway through interview

Sky Sports presenter Kelly Cates has looked to clear up confusion around Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher's awkward walk-off during live coverage of Southampton and Liverpool on Friday night.

Cates, the host of Friday Night Football's coverage, asked the punditry pair a question before they swiftly turned away from her, carrying on their conversation as they walked towards the tunnel.

The camera angle following the two men still had Cates stood still with her microphone in the background and viewers were left stunned despite the moment being planned by the production team.

After seeing her social media flooded with questions about whether she had been disrespected or whether there was a breakdown in communication, Cates clarified what was happening in that awkward - but hilarious - moment.

She tweeted: 'They were going to interview (Ralph) Hasenhuttl in the tunnel!

'Would have looked weird if they didn’t have anything to say I [sic] the way there.'

The moment happened in the pre-match discussion segment as the two pundits were directed to head towards the tunnel as they were due to speak to Southampton boss Hasenhuttl before the contest.

While some viewers saw the funny side, others were left disappointed at how the transition was delivered with Cates stood awkwardly at the back of the frame.

One Twitter user wrote: 'They didn't even say bye to you @KellyCates'.

Another added: 'It looks like a video game when it runs into a bug and the NPC's just talk while walking away from each other.'

Paul Wallace, watching the coverage, felt the blame lie with the production rather than the presenter or the pundits.

'It's weird because @KellyCates asked the question then the guys turned their back on her to answer it and discuss amongst themselves. Just a bit of a clumsy set up IMO,' he tweeted.
