Goals, assists, chances created... Messi leads nearly every La Liga stat

2018-19 has been another astonishing season for Lionel Messi as he guided Barcelona's successful defence of their league crown.

With the Copa del Rey final still to come at the weekend there remains a chance for more silverware.

And the Argentine's dominance has been laid bare by the key statistics of the league season, which are almost all headed by Messi.

No one has scored more or assisted more. No one has had more shots, or more on target.

No one has created more chances or big chances for that matter. He has won more fouls in the final third, hit more passes in the final third and even hit the woodwork more than anyone else.

He has scored more goals outside the box and more free-kicks than anyone. And he leads the way on braces and hat-tricks too.

Only in completed take-ons does he have a superior. Celta Vigo's Sofiane Boufal managed to complete 144, 10 more than Messi, who claims second place.

Messi's astonishing return is given greater virtue by the fact he missed four league games this season.

He scored 36 times in just 34 games - the fifh time he has averaged more than a goal per game in a La Liga campaign.

Messi bagged a brace on in Barca's 2-2 draw with Eibar at the weekend to take his haul to 50 for the season.

It is the sixth time Messi has notched a half-century in a single season.

And despite his dominance, it still stands some way short of the 73 goals he plundered in 2011-12.
