Wigan could have new ownership in the shape of a group led by former Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson.
The 33-year-old is still playing for Salford City in League Two but made his name at United between 2005-2012.
He has emerged as the leader of a surprise group seeking to buy the administration-hit League One strugglers, according to the Athletic.
Gibson's consortium are reportedly the new favourites to take control after a potential takeover from a Spanish investor fell through late in the process last month.
A total of 38 groups or individuals interested in buying Wigan have so far approached the administrators Gerald Krasner and Paul Stanley, they revealed last week.
Four of those have even provided the proof of funds necessary to take the process to the next stage if given the green light.
One of those is the group fronted by Gibson, who himself played for Wigan during the 2018-19 season.
According to the report, Gibson and Co will have an online meeting with the EFL this week and the potential new owners have a foreign investor along with management team with a 'strong track record in British football'.
One section of the report read: 'Gibson’s group, which might be joined by two other footballers, is understood to have the funds to purchase the club in a bank account and a loan lined to fund the club going forward.'
Gibson himself could find himself playing against the Latics if they are relegated this season and Salford City remain in the fourth tier.
The 33-year-old is coming towards the end of a career in which he established himself at Old Trafford having come through United's academy.
He moved to Everton in 2012 before joining Sunderland, Wigan and then Salford, a club owned by a number of his former team-mates including Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.

All these stupid comments from fans after the sheffield loss we accept defeat, complaining won't change anything nd our manager clearly took this game for granted so it's up to him to fix his errors and change his mentality when it comes to substitutes. If he sees his team need a boost why wait until there's 20 min left in the game why not show sum urgency from his side and get the players that make a difference onto the field.I truly blame Ole for his squad selection nd for not playing his strongest team.He has to understand that this is one of the closest title races ever nd every game should be treated as a cup final there are no room for errors therefore I wish my team all the best going forward but I think we still need one more season or 2 or 3 signings to strengthen our defence and a clinical forward then we will have a real title hope. Us as fans should not jump the gun an expect too much we surely on the right path nd it won't be too long till will be back to our glory days. Win or lose Man U forever #GGMU
