Guards to protect Man United's Holy Trinity statue amid protests against Glazers

The iconic Holy Trinity statue at Old Trafford of George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton is to be protected by organisers of the large anti-Glazer protests that will take place before Sunday's game against Liverpool.

Up to 10,000 United fans are expected to converge on the stadium from 2pm calling for the club's American bosses to step down and be replaced by a new model that would give fans ownership and voting rights.

Demonstration leaders were worried by aspects of last week's spontaneous protest, which saw some supporters clamber on the statue and place green and gold scarves over the three United legends.

Aware that the wider world will be looking for signs of unrest, they plan to shield the Holy Trinity from anyone who wants to interfere with it.

A strong statement attacking the Glazers is scheduled to be read out in front of the statue at 3pm, an hour-and-a-half before kick off.

Best, Law and Charlton are synonymous with United's history, helping Matt Busby to rebuild the club after the 1958 Munich air crash and winning the European Cup 10 years later.
