Gylfi Sigurdsson is reportedly poised to sign for Wayne Rooney's DC United.

The former Iceland international, 33, left Everton at the end of the 2021-22 season when his contract expired and has not played since.

Sigurdsson is due in Washington to sign for the Major League Soccer outfit managed by former England captain and Everton striker Rooney, The Sun report.

The attacking midfielder and Rooney were team-mates at Goodison Park during the 2017-18 season after Sigurdsson completed a £45million transfer from Swansea.

Sigurdsson was spotted in a rare picture on his wife's social media page last week.

They had both disabled their accounts but his wife Alexandra Ivarsdottir, who was Miss Iceland in 2018, posted a snap of the pair and their daughter to 16,800 followers after reactivating her Instagram.

The photo was captioned 'La familia' followed by a white heart and a globe emoji.

Free agent Sigurdsson was linked with a move to Turkish club Galatasaray but that failed to materialise despite a reported £1.7m-per-year contract offer.

Rooney, 37, spent two seasons as a player at DC United in 2018 and 2019 before returning to coach them in July 2022 after he resigned as Derby County manager.

DC United are presently ninth in the Eastern Conference of MLS, still within a shot of making the end-of-season play-offs.
