The coach from Terassa shocked many with the news that he will stand down as FC Barcelona coach at the end of the current season.
Xavi Hernández surprised many on Saturday night when the coach confirmed that he plans to step down as Barcelona boss at the end of the season, the Blaugrana now need to have a replacement ready to go on 1 July - assuming that the current head coach sees out the rest of the campaign as he intends to.
For the time being, the Barça board plans to leave Xavi in his position until his stated departure date of 30 June, but if results continue to go against the LaLiga champions, that could change.
The former player has been constantly under fire in the past few weeks and his team have slipped up time and time again with a poor showing at the Super Cup shortly followed up with a Copa del Rey quarter final exit last week at the hands of Athletic. His side are still alive in the Champions League as the domestic league looks to set to be a two horse race between Girona and Real Madrid.
With over 750 appearances in the famous claret and navy stripes, Xavi Hernandez will always be regarded as a Barça legend in the eyes of Culès across the world. He, along with Andres Iniesta were the heartbeat of the famous Barcelona side that dominated the Spanish game under the tutelage of coach Pep Guardiola.
In his time as a player with the Camp Nou club between 1998-2015, Xavi amassed an impressive array of domestic, European and global honours with Barça.
With the former Barcelona learning his coaching trade with Qatari side Al-Saad, it was always just a question of time before the Terassa native returned to Camp Nou to take the reigns as head coach.
After club president Joan Laporta decided to terminate the previous incumbent Ronald Koeman’s tenure on the bench, Xavi was the number one choice and on 6 November (2021) he was unveiled as the new head coach of the Catalan giants.
Despite not lifting any silverware in his first season as coach, Xavi did manage to rescue the side from their poor position under Koeman (9th) with the Camp Nou outfit ending the season in second place in LaLiga.
The following season Xavi oversaw Barcelona’s LaLiga title and along with the Super Cup win in Riyadh in January 2023, these two triumphs remain the 44-year-old’s only additions to the FC Barcelona silverware cabinet in his watch.
A successful Champions League campaign (Barça face Napoli in the Round of 16) this season and securing a top four finish which would guarantee UCL football next season will now be the manager’s key objectives in his final months on the Barcelona bench.
