How much Chelsea will pocket in mega-money windfall if Bayern sell Musiala

Chelsea stand to secure a mega-money windfall if Bayern Munich sell Jamal Musiala, the 21-year-old German sensation who is being linked with an £80million move to the world's biggest clubs including Manchester City and Liverpool.

Musiala joined Bayern at the age of 16 from Chelsea's academy after agreeing a compensation package worth around €200,000 (£170,000).

No buy-back clause was inserted in that 2019 switch, but sources have told Mail Sport that a sell-on fee worth 20 per cent was included.

Rio Ferdinand was highly complimentary of the Germany international with 25 caps last week, saying he 'has the potential to win the Ballon d'Or'.

Musiala's current contract is due to expire in 2026 with rival clubs circling in the hope that Bayern fail to agree an extension with the youngster who scored one goal and assisted two in their last Bundesliga win over Mainz.

If Musiala was sold for £80m, Chelsea would be due a whopping £16m of that transaction – a sum which could boost their bid to satisfy the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules even if paid in instalments.

Chelsea maintain they will be compliant with PSR, despite rival clubs claiming they need to raise significant funds this summer to avoid a breach.

Chelsea learned a harsh lesson when they were criticised for failing to secure a sell-on clause while negotiating Romelu Lukaku's exit to Everton in 2014.

He was sold for £75m to Manchester United in 2017 with the London club not receiving a penny from that transfer.

There is no guarantee that Musiala will be sold this summer as Bayern have made no secret of their desire to tie him down to a new deal.

However, the longer there is no breakthrough, the likelier it is that interested clubs will make their moves as the next window nears.

Chelsea themselves have been linked with Musiala – he is the ideal age for their strategy in signing young talent and Mauricio Pochettino previously branded him 'one of the best young players in the world with Gavi and Pedri' – and they will continue to monitor the situation.

Musiala, now represented by the agency 11WINS, has won multiple Bundesliga titles with Bayern and has been capped 25 times by Germany despite being eligible for England after playing for their youth sides.

Chelsea wanted Musiala to stay when he was 16 – he had been with them since the age of eight – but the Stuttgart-born starlet decided to embark on a adventure in Munich.

It is understood the offer of a contract was key to Chelsea being entitled compensation from Bayern.

Clubs try their best to come to an agreement to avoid the matter going to a tribunal, which can be costly.

Mail Sport reported last month how Chelsea had been told to pay yet more compensation to Brighton after a tribunal told them to hand over up to £7.65m for two of their teenage talents they secured.

Shumaira Mheuka and Zak Sturge made their moves in 2022, but the Seagulls could now land a lucrative payday as well as boasting 20 per cent sell-on fees for both players.
