Real Madrid's first Champions League elimination since May 2015 was always going to cause a storm, yet Emilio Butragueno attempted to ease tensions somewhat by suggesting that everyone was aware what the players had given to the club, and that it's not possible to always win.

Ajax arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday knowing they had to score a minimum of two goals, and that's exactly what they did in a memorable 4-1 victory.

"We're all aware of what these players have given us, but it's not possible to always win," he admitted.

"Tonight is a sad night for everyone, but you have to be calm; this is how sport is.

"It's a very hard blow, but we'll continue."

Despite their excellent domestic performances this term, few believed the Amsterdam club could actually progress, however Butragueno was quick to congratulate them.

"I wish to congratulate Ajax for their super performance," he intimated.

"We're sorry for our fans.

"The players have fought tonight, but we've not been able to go through."

Two successive defeats to Barcelona, coupled with Tuesday's debacle, has left Los Blancos essentially looking at their season as a closed book by 5 March.

LaLiga Santander success is now virtually impossible, with the former Real Madrid goalscorer admitting that what has happened was the worst possible scenario for the club.

"A week ago, we were full of belief in three competitions," he confirmed.

"However, the worst possible scenario is the one which has ended up being our reality."
