Bristol Rovers manager Joey Barton revealed what he said to his players ahead of their game with Sheffield Wednesday as he posted a photo of his tactics board.

The match ended 1-1 at Hillsborough on Wednesday in what was an important and hard-fought point for 14th placed Rovers against the Owls who are currently third in League One.

Barton, who guided his side to promotion from League Two last season in his first full campaign in charge, saw his side fight back in the game thanks to a second half equaliser from Josh Coburn.

Following the game, the former Manchester City and Newcastle midfielder posted his thoughts on the game, alongside several photos.

Barton tweeted: 'Another solid team performance. Nice to be in those arenas with our magnificent fan base. Thank you to all those who travelled.

'Good team Sheff Wed and important for our group to go toe to toe with them. See you all Saturday. Safe journey home. Up The Gas!'

However, one photo that he posted showed his tactics board from the Rovers changing room.

The complex piece of paper was covered with various plans, messages and motivational statements for his players.

The top of the board said in capital letters: '3 PTS AVAILABLE'.

His main instructions to his players involved 'big start', 'turn them early', 'attack is best form of defence', 'squeeze space' and 'play in their half'.

The motivational messages to his side also included 'show football courage', 'be brave', 'show the world tonight' and 'decide to be victorious'.

Further inspiring messages to his side included 'you're unique', 'a one off', 'a true superstar' and 'show the world tonight'.

There were also words of wisdom in dealing with playing against a vociferous crowd and at one of the largest stadiums in the league.

Barton instructed his team to show 'a collective bed of discipline - no reactions: expect mind games' and pointed out it was '18 of us vs 18 ... their fans can't help!'

The final plans he showed his players included a diagram which went 'talking - encouraging - inspiring - uplifiting - psychological effects'.
