John Brooks is appointed to VAR duty for Man City's Premier League game with Liverpool

Blundering VAR official John Brooks has been appointed to VAR duty for Man City's crunch clash with Liverpool - just over a month since he was removed from the role after making a 'significant' error.

Brooks was in charge of VAR for Brighton's trip to Crystal Palace in February and incorrectly disallowed Pervis Estupinan's first-half goal because he drew the offside lines from the wrong defender.

The line was drawn from James Tomkins rather than last man Marc Guehi, who was standing behind him. The goal would have stood had it been correctly drawn from Guehi instead.

Roberto De Zerbi's side went on to be held by Palace 1-1 as they dropped crucial points in their race for Europe.

Brooks was subsequently taken off VAR duty for the Merseyside derby and Arsenal vs Man City in the following week after his mistake.

However, he will be responsible for VAR during Saturday's lunchtime kick off at the Etihad as Pep Guardiola's side aim to claw back an eight-point deficit to the Gunners.

Brooks has also been appointed as referee for Man United's home clash with Brentford next Wednesday.

The PGMOL confirmed the news of Brooks being dropped after his error in the Brighton v Palace game in a statement at the time, saying: 'John Brooks has been replaced as VAR for both Liverpool v Everton tonight and Arsenal v Manchester City on Wednesday evening.

'Andre Marriner and David Coote will assume VAR duties in his place tonight and Wednesday respectively. Due to a Monday evening fixture, appointments for the weekend's matches will be announced tomorrow.'

Brighton meanwhile, fumed at Brooks's error against the Seagulls and said they had received an apology from the PGMOL for the error.

'As was confirmed to the club by PGMOL last night, a serious error was made in disallowing Pervis Estupinan's goal at Crystal Palace yesterday afternoon,' the club said.

'The lines drawn in the VAR room to determine whether Pervis was in an offside position were drawn incorrectly, and the goal should have stood.

'While hugely disappointed by the error, the club has accepted PGMOL's apology and will not be making any further comment.'
