Lukaku's performance, not helped by his team-mates, had been pretty much static against Palace and yet Havertz made a brilliant run to get on the end of Cesar Azpilicueta's cross from which he missed.
The 22-year-old created space for himself to force Jardim to make a save from his seventh touch that forced the corner from which he opened the scoring. Havertz had initially looked like he had been found unmarked by Ziyech's delivery, but he had actually made a driving run from near the edge of the box to leap for the ball.
These were the nights, in the knockout stages of the Champions League, for which Chelsea paid £97.5 million to sign Lukaku. But Havertz, while not yet fully living up to his billing when he arrived at Stamford Bridge, has proved to be the man for the big occasion for the west Londoners.
It was Havertz who scored against Manchester City to make Chelsea European Champions last year and it was his penalty that secured the Club World Cup trophy that was paraded on the pitch ahead of kick-off on Tuesday night.
This was the first time Lukaku had been dropped or rested since missing a game after his controversial interview with Sky Italia. Tuchel on Monday had insisted that he would continue to support him, but that did not extend to starting the former Inter Milan star against Lille.
Ahead of kick-off, Tuchel said: “I felt he (Lukaku) was a bit tired and exhausted, he has played a lot, extra-times, travelling and it was not the best performance (against Crystal Palace) so maybe it is easier to come off the bench and turn things around if needed.”
As it transpired, Tuchel decided that Lukaku was not needed as he was not one of the four players sent on from the bench.
