Kroos explains why he chose to shoot straight from the corner against Valencia

Real Madrid earned a 3-1 victory over Valencia in the Supercopa de Espana with Toni Kroos scoring an impressive goal directly from a corner, which he suggested was down to seeing the goalkeeper coming off his line to talk to a defender.

Los Blancos have now booked their place in the final of the four-team tournament with their opponent set to be the victory of the clash between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in Jeddah on Thursday evening.

"It was spontaneous, I ran to the corner and could see the Valencia goalkeeper talking to a defender five metres away from goal," Kroos explained in an interview with Sport1.

"Of course, I had to take a quick decision and the strike was clean.

"I tried it in the Champions League against PSG and it almost worked, but Keylor Navas caught the ball at the last moment."

When quizzed on whether it was a skill he had practised, the former Bayern Munich midfielder stated that the technique was no different to any other set-piece.

"You don't have to work on it," he added.

"It's actually the same kind of shot as a free-kick or a cross, you just aim at another area.

"It's unusual that it worked as well as this, but this isn't the most difficult shot."

Zinedine Zidane was forced to use five in midfield against Los Che, mainly due to absences, and the German international believes the players executed the system well.

"At the beginning it was because of the team's situation, we didn't have Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale or Eden Hazard," he said.

"We tried to make the best of it, it worked well, but this was just one game.

"Personally, I like it when there are a lot of midfielders on the pitch, but it's difficult to say whether this is a long-term change."
