Bayer Leverkusen complete UNBEATEN Bundesliga season under Xabi Alonso as they beat Augsburg 2-1 on the final day to stretch their undefeated streak to 51 matches.
Match Report
Bayer Leverkusen completed their unbeaten Bundesliga campaign by beating Augsburg 2-1 on Saturday.
Having wrapped up the title several weeks ago, the final league match of the season was always set to be a joyous occasion for Xabi Alonso's men in front of their home fans, and they did not disappoint.
The hosts took the lead through Victor Boniface inside 12 minutes and then doubled their advantage 15 minutes later thanks to Robert Andrich.
Augsburg briefly threatened a comeback in the second half when Mert Komur pulled a goal back in the 62nd minute, but Leverkusen held on to secure their historic achievement.
The players celebrated together on the pitch afterwards, while Alonso mobbed his coaching staff, before lifting the Bundesliga trophy in front of a capacity crowd.
Leverkusen had never won a league title in their 120-year history prior to this season, but they romped away with the Bundesliga this time around, finishing on 90 points from 34 matches, with 28 wins and six draws.
Across these matches, Leverkusen scored 89 goals and conceded just 24 times, highlighting their dominance.
They finished 17 points clear of second-placed Stuttgart, who overtook Harry Kane's Bayern Munich in the table on the final day.
With Kane absent due to a back injury, Bayern raced into a two-goal lead, but collapsed to a 4-2 defeat, while Stuttgart eased past Borussia Monchengladbach 4-0 to jump a point and a place above Thomas Tuchel's side.
Leverkusen have also thrived in other competitions, and remain on course to win an unprecedented Treble without losing a single game.
Alonso's team have not lost any of their last 51 matches, and are into the final of the Europa League where they will face Serie A outfit Atalanta on Wednesday night.
They will then take on Kaiserslautern in the German Cup final next Saturday.
Leverkusen have only previously won the Europa League once, when it was known as the UEFA Cup back in 1987-88.
They have also won the German Cup (DFB-Pokal) once in 1993, and have finished runners-up in the competition three times since.

Opponents are now confused when they meet Leverkusen… they don’t know if they have to score first or they should let Leverkusen score them and they go their way.🤣🤣

With Sadio Mane Bayern Muchen won the league and from the start he was hated. It shows how difficult it is for an African to proof himself in Europe. Harry Kane scored a lot of goals, won nothing but is much loved.
