Daniel Craig has been spotted at Anfield many times with the Gallagher brothers' unstoppable enthusiasm for Man City throughout the years.
The beautiful game has brought us gasps and awes. And many world-renowned celebrities are just like us.
Does Sir McCartney support Liverpool or Everton? Is Justin Bieber really a Barca fan? Shakira used to be a Madridista?
Let's find out.
1. Celebrity Arsenal fans
Idris Elba
The London-born film actor is an Arsenal superfan, and has professed his love for the Gunners on many occasions.
Elba has even gone on to say how the thought of rival north London club Tottenham winning the league would make him physically sick: "I’d be physically ill, literally throwing up. They haven’t been doing that great for ages, so now they’re doing alright, good luck to them."
Colin Firth
Firth is a keen Arsenal supporter, and his allegiance with the Gunners led him to take on the lead role in 1997's "Fever Pitch". Based on the popular novel by Nick Hornby, the film follows the life and times of an Arsenal fan as the Gunners go through a season of hardship.
Jay-Z
Much like director Spike Lee, rapper Jay-Z's affections for Arsenal are rooted in his admiration of Thierry Henry.
He has frequented the Emirates a handful of times, as seen in the photo. In this particular occasion, he was accompanied by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, who was possibly explaining to him the offside rule.
Roger Waters
Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters was born in Surrey and raised largely in Cambridge, but it's in north London that the guitarist found his football home.
In the 1973 song "Money," Waters muses "Four-star caviar daydream / Think I’ll buy me a football team." The Gunners may yet be a bit pricey for his tastes, but if Waters ever was to invest, the Emirates would likely be where his funds were directed.
2. Celebrity Barcelona fans
Kobe Bryant
The basketball legend joined the club for a promotional event in 2006 and has returned to visit the Catalan side on many occasions, and wore a Barcelona jersey on the cover of ESPN The Magazine.
Justin Bieber
One would suspect Justin Bieber's loyalties may be for sale to whomever is convenient or "hip" at any given moment, but there was a time when Barcelona seemed like the only club for America's most beloved pop artist.
In 2011, Bieber took part in a training session with Barca, at least choosing a side in the Spanish debate, imagining it might be hard for him to flip sides and choose Real afterwards.
The 21-year-old could undoubtedly instate "Bieber Fever" and send ticket sales soaring if he were to firmly lodge his support in one location, but the fickle starlet is yet to set anchor on where his support truly lies.
Shakira
Well, this one must be obvious considering she dates FC Barcelona defender Gerard Pique and she even has a child with him. She has been often seen in the stands cheering on for the Spanish International and the Catalan club.
But the Colombian singer was actually a true Madridista from heart before her relationship with Pique. Real Madrid Florentino Perez even presented a No. 5 jersey to there a few years ago.
However, with the switch, she broke the one rule between the La Liga rivals which is never to change the loyalty and since her songs have been banned from being played at the Bernabeu. So it was kind of Figo all over again.
3. Celebrity Chelsea fans
Will Ferrell
One of Hollywood's most beloved comedians, Ferrell is a fan of both LAFC and Chelsea. He is one of several celebrity owners of the Tinseltown side along with Mia Hamm and Magic Johnson.
Ferrell is also a fan of the Blues and acted as honourary club captain during a U.S. pre-season game in 2009 against Inter.
The comedian also once made a crack at Jose Mourinho's tactics when he was manager of the club, quoted as saying at the GQ awards: "Keep playing defence man, keep playing seven guys in the box. I love it, I love it."
Ed Sheeran
It took the "Shape of You" hit-maker some time to make up his mind, but Ed Sheeran revealed on his official Twitter account that he belonged to the Chelsea throngs.
Bryan Adams
The legendary frontman himself, Canadian vocalist and guitarist and one of the greatest singer-songwriter of all time, Bryan Adams. With immortal classics like “Summer of 69,” “Everything I Do,” “Heaven” (and the list could go on), Bryan has truly been an inspiration over the last three decades.
And Chelsea fans can proudly claim that he is a supporter of the Blues.
Emma Watson
Emma Watson is a Chelsea FC fan. Her support for football teams doesn’t stop at following the Premier League either. Watson is also a big fan of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, where she supports her home country of England’s squad, Lionesses. She was one of the celebrities to participate in revealing squad members.
4. Celebrity Liverpool fans
Daniel Craig
007 – aka James Bond – is a dedicated Liverpool supporter, having attended numerous games at Anfield over the years.
His open support for the Merseysiders gathered criticism, however, considering his role as Bond. TalkSPORT presenter Mike Parry claimed that as the character of Bond 'belongs to the whole of England', he should, therefore, be a neutral football fan. Though Parry iterated that Craig is free to support whoever he pleases, Bond has no affiliation to any particular team. Quite predictably, his comments garnered much criticism on social media.
Samuel L Jackson
The "Pulp Fiction" star fell in love with Liverpool when he shot the 2002 film "51st State" in the city, experiencing a game at Anfield – and hasn't stopped supporting the Reds since.
Jackson is vocal with his support for the Reds, often tweeting variations of "LIVERPOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!" on his account.
The actor is apparently so affiliated with Liverpool that when Mesut Ozil wrongly branded him as an Arsenal fan in a tweet when the two met in 2014, he had to re-upload and re-caption the photo more generically.
Mike Myers
The "Shrek" voice actor is a lifelong Liverpool fan and can be spotted at Anfield on the regular. Though he was born in Canada, his parents emigrated from Liverpool in 1956 and he is a devoted follower of the Reds, both home and away and across the Atlantic. He is known to make surprise appearances at Liverpool support club the Boot Room in New York City to watch games, to the delight of fellow American supporters.
The ashes of Myers' father were scattered on the Mersey by Mike and his brother Paul after his death in 1991.
5. Celebrity Manchester City fans
Noel and Liam Gallagher
Oasis’ Gallagher brothers are both huge fans of Manchester City, but pretty much everyone on the planet knows that as they are so vocal in their support for the club. The elder brother Noel often appears on British radio station TalkSport to talk about City and other football matters. Both can be spotted at many of City’s bigger matches, but in separate boxes after a major falling out between the two a few years back.
6. Celebrity Manchester United fans
Justin Timberlake
How did Justin end up as one of the Red Devils? That’s right. The multi platinum selling artist is a dedicated fan of Manchester United. It was perhaps the chance to meet with former Manchester United striker Alan Smith at the Lowry Hotel that inspired him to join the Old Trafford faithful.
Back in 2008 he had said, “I'm a Red! I'm mates with Smithy so he's my favorite player but Ronaldo doesn't suck either, he's awesome. I really like Rooney too.”
One Direction
In March 2013, One Direction’s Harry Styles announced to the world that he is a Manchester United fan after he performed on the stage by wearing the Red Devils’ jersey. The shirt had former defender Ferdinand’s name written behind it with whom he hanged out on the weekend before the show.
Reports suggested that Rio even kept his restaurant open until 2am so he could dine with the One Direction hunk after his show.
But the real problem is that the 20-year-old has been spotted on different venues and has put on jerseys of different clubs which is evident from the snapshots he has taken with the band.
So even if the English sensation is an avid Manchester United fan reportedly, David Moyes’s time in the club may have prompted him to take safety measures and vary his support publicly. And for the United faithful who don’t like that fact, cheer yourselves up with this video of Harry getting injured during an exhibition match.
7.Celebrity Real Madrid fans
Enrique Iglesias
Spain’s one of all-time top selling artist Julio Iglesias is a die hard supporter of Real Madrid. The singer-songwriter had a small stint with the club as a goalkeeper with the Blancos if you didn’t know. But his dream of wearing the white jersey ended after a car accident and he turned into a great artist that he is today.
And his son Enrique is just like him, a Madridista. Enrique Iglesias is one of the renowned global artist and his music has been acclaimed worldwide. He was born in the Capital city of Spain and has remained loyal to the club even though he has been mostly in the US busy with his career in music.
His favourite players are Barcelona’s Lionel Messi (surprising), Madrid club captain Iker Casillas and former midfielder Xabi Alonso. Enrique even got the opportunity to click pictures with the Champions League trophy in the club’s museum.
Jennifer Lopez
If Barca get a titanic songstress at their back on a par with Shakira, it seems only fair the other El Clasico rival, Real Madrid, gets a similar alluring power in the shape of Jennifer Lopez.
J-Lo performed in Madrid several years ago donning a Real jersey and was seen rubbing shoulders with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos, showing precisely where her allegiances lie.
8. Celebrity Tottenham Hotspur fans
Jude Law
The London-born two-time Academy Award nominee is a lifelong devotee of Tottenham Hotspur, and has been spotted at their training ground. He has also given an interview to Spurs TV about his love for the club following their qualification for the Champions League in 2010.
Though he has regretted the fact that his busy schedule does not permit him to follow the Lilywhites as often as he likes, he still makes an effort to attend the games on matchday.
Adele
You may take the girl out of Tottenham—away to the furthest corners of the globe, in fact—but you can never take Tottenham out of the girl.
North London born and bred, multiple Grammy Award winner Adele has scaled the charts in recent years but still manages to make the odd appearance at White Hart Lane.
9. And many others...
Tom Hanks - Aston Villa
The beloved "Forrest Gump" and "Saving Private Ryan" actor is a keen football follower, though it wouldn't be of a club you'd normally expect! Hanks is a supporter of none other than Aston Villa, though he has admitted that his loyalties lie there due to his fondness for the club's name rather than for their form or history – claiming that he thinks Aston Villa sounded "pleasant".
He has been featured on Aston Villa TV and was invited as a guest when they played Portland Timbers.
Katy Perry - West Ham
How much she supports the Hammers, we practically have no clue about that. From contemporary Christian artist to a mainstream music bombshell, singer-songwriter Katy Perry has roared her way to the top of the music industry.
But her ex-husband, comedian Russel Brand, is a hardcore West Ham United supporter. And to demonstrate her support in Brand’s passion for the club, Perry wore a West Ham lingerie and appeared at the 2009 MTV Awards . Don’t know what to say about that.
Sylvester Stallone - Everton
The "Rocky" actor is a Toffees supporter and even visited Goodison Park in 2007 for a game.
His affiliation to the Merseyside club is due to his friendship with club director Robert Earl, and previously spoke of his regret of not buying out the club when he had the chance.
James McAvoy - Celtic
The Glasgow native is a die-hard Celtic supporter and actually earned his role in the film "The Last Station" through being a football fan. He bonded with the producer, who supported Manchester United, alongside his own support of the Hoops.
He has often lamented the difficulty of being a Celtic supporter, however, stating in an interview with The Guardian: "Being a Celtic fan is hard. You get the incredible highs, like beating Man Utd or Barcelona, but then the low-level depression when you get humped."
Sir Elton John - Watford
The legendary musician, born in Middlesex, is a lifelong supporter of the Hornets and became club chairman in 1976.
He then declared an ambition to take the team into the First Division, sacked George Kirby's successor Mike Keen in April 1977 and was honoured with the Elton John Stand in 2014.
Gerard Butler - Celtic
The Scottish actor is a die-hard Celtic fan and got so worked up over his side's Champions League match against Barcelona in 2012 that he had to depart his business dinner in Dubai to finish the game.
He has since claimed to have been in tears by the end of the fixture, which the Hoops won 2-1.
Butler has supported the Scottish side since childhood and even got to represent Celtic in the 2012 film "Playing for Keeps" as a "has-been" player.
Dave Grohl - West Ham
The former Nirvana drummer, Foo Fighters guitarist and lead singer, and all around music impresario is a big fan of Premier League football and said in a VH1 interview that West Ham are his club of choice. West Ham do seem to be a trendy choice though for celebrity fans, but Grohl is a pretty straight shooter so I'll take his word for it.
Bruce Dickinson and Steve Harris - West Ham
Whereas you can maybe question if Grohl’s blood bleeds claret and blue, there’s no doubting the allegiance of Iron Maiden legends Bruce Dickinson and Steve Harris to West Ham. Both are huge fans of the Hammers and have been since childhood. Harris was actually offered a trial with the Upton Park club as a teenager before opting for a career in music. When they aren’t summoning hellfire, Iron Maiden also runs its own football team made up of band members and their friends. Harris also plays a guitar that designed with Hammers colours at most Maiden concerts.
Ozzy Osbourne and Geezer Butler - Aston Villa
With both Osbourne and Butler born in Aston, Birmingham there was only one club the former Black Sabbath legends could support and that was The Villa. Although you’re more likely to see Geezer at Villa Park these days than the Godfather of Heavy Metal, both are lifelong fans of the Midlands side.
Rod Stewart - Celtic
Although he’s yet another celebrity that dubiously claims to support West Ham, the club that’s closet to the Scottish crooner’s heart is Celtic. Stewart even mentioned his love for the club in his hit song “You’re in My Heart”. Rod was actually quite a talented player as a youngster and played in Brentford’s youth system. He is still often seen at both Celtic matches and Scotland internationals.
Brian Johnson - Newcastle United
Although thought of an Australian band, the lead singer of rockers ACDC, Brian Johnson, is in fact from Newcastle and is a massive fan of his local side. Johnson even appeared in a cameo role as a Newcastle United shirt wearing fan in the film “Goal: The Dream Begins”.
Pusha T - AC Milan
Sometimes, one player is all that's needed in order to recruit a whole new demographic to one's club, and Mario Balotelli's time back at Milan in 2013 and 2014 appears to have succeeded in luring rapper Pusha T to the San Siro.
During a performance in 2013, Pusha T emerged with a Milan jersey on, complete with the name "Camorra" on the back, a crime family that operates in Naples. James Harris of Complex said of the choice:
Camorra is the name of the Mafia-like organized crime syndicate that operates in Naples, Italy. Mario Balotelli is an incredibly talented and controversial soccer player who currently plays for AC Milan, an Italian soccer powerhouse. Their connection is a strange one, but it's what Pusha T was alluding to when he performed in his custom jersey.
Paul McCartney - Everton (and Liverpool)
We saved the best for the last.
The Beatles are largely regarded as one of the most influential and potentially best bands of all time, so for Paul McCartney to be able to give a city like Liverpool even the slightest boost is tremendous.
And although he's ultimately a Blue, McCartney was quoted by the Observer Sports Monthly (h/t Liverpool Echo's David Prentice) back in 2008 explaining that some esteemed company led him to support Everton and Liverpool:
Here’s the deal: my father was born in Everton, my family are officially Evertonians, so if it comes down to a derby match or an FA Cup final between the two, I would have to support Everton.
But after a concert at Wembley Arena I got a bit of a friendship with Kenny Dalglish, who had been to the gig and I thought ‘You know what? I am just going to support them both because it’s all Liverpool and I don’t have that Catholic-Protestant thing.
So I did have to get special dispensation from the Pope to do this but that’s it, too bad. I support them both.
They are both great teams.
But if it comes to the crunch, I’m Evertonian.
It's anyone's guess as to how many—if any—Merseysiders will be able to accept McCartney's stance on matters, but then "peace and love" was always the musician's bag.
