Lucas Digne was struck by a bottle after getting an assist for Aston Villa in their 1-0 victory over the defender's former club Everton.
The Frenchman joined Villa from the Toffees nine days ago after falling out with Rafael Benitez, who has since been sacked.
Digne received a frosty reception on his return to Goodison Park and infuriated fans by setting up Emi Buendia's winner.
It was Digne's corner which was headed home by Buendia in first-half stoppage time and celebrations in front of the home faithful quickly turned ugly.
A full bottle was thrown in the direction of the Villa players and appeared to strike full-backs Matty Cash and Digne.
Both players fell to the floor holding their heads as more objects were lobbed from the stands.
The deal to sell Digne to Villa for £25m has proved controversial among fans.
Everton are now short at left-back and the man who Digne fell out with – Benitez – is no longer at the club.
It is not the first time a player has been hit with a bottle this season, as Leeds' recent 3-1 victory over Burnley was marred when Matt Lowton was struck by an object.
And according to Everton's official twiteer account, police have arrested a supporter at Goodison Park for throwing a missile onto the pitch during today’s Premier League match against Aston Villa.

That fan should become their new left back for his accuracy in picking out Digne in the throw 😆 🤔 Fans should be arrested for such misconducts in the field ✅✅
