Luiz Diaz changes shirt number to emulate club icons like Suarez and Dalglish

Luis Diaz has taken the historic No 7 jersey at Liverpool ahead of the new season - and it could end up quite the expensive change for him.

As James Milner is joining Brighton, the Colombian assumes the shirt number worn over time by Liverpool legends like Kenny Dalglish, Kevin Keegan, and Luis Suarez.

And after making the switch from No 23, the winger has promised to personally reimburse any fans who have already bought 'Diaz' kits with his old number for this season, by exchanging them with a shirt featuring his updated number.

The move will no doubt endear him further to an Anfield crowd who have embraced the 26-year-old since his arrival from Porto in January 2022.

In his time at Liverpool, Diaz has scored 11 and assisted eight in 47 games but missed around six months of this season with a knee injury.

He takes a number worn with diligence for eight years by James Milner and is reunited with the digit played in at Porto.

During his final half-season in Portugal, Diaz registered 16 goals, and fans will be hoping that a rekindling of his relationship with the number can revive that form.

Liverpool started selling their Nike home kits for the new season on 18th May and have only just revealed Diaz's numerical upgrade.

A club statement reads: 'Supporters who have already purchased the 2023-24 replica home jersey printed with the name 'Luis Diaz' and the number '23' on will be personally reimbursed by the attacker with a like-for-like exchange for a 'Luis Diaz 7' shirt.

'The exchange only applies to all 'Luis Diaz 23' 2023-24 home shirts or kits purchased in official club retail outlets, via the official LFC online store or LFC Retail app.

'Any qualifying shirts or kit must be returned with proof of purchase by 11.59pm BST on July 31, 2023.'

'Any 'Luis Diaz 23' shirts and kit exchanged will be retained by the club and donated to LFC Foundation.'

While many will see the switch as a hike up the squad hierarchy, he was still in stellar company donning No 23, with Jamie Carragher and Robbie Fowler having donned the shirt in years gone by.
