Man City training squad before Schalke Champions League game

Pep Guardiola had 10 defenders at his disposal for Manchester City's training session the day before Schalke but will not be able to play the back four he wants.

Nicolas Otamendi , one of the ten, is not available after his red card in the first leg while Eliaquim Mangala, another, is not available for selection in the matchday squad; Philippe Sandler, who recently was added to the list, was not present at the club training ground on Monday afternoon.

With Vincent Kompany also absent, Aymeric Laporte and John Stones could be rushed back to the first team despite both suffering from injuries in the last three weeks.

Young centre-backs Eric Garcia and Cameron Humphreys were in the squad, and Guardiola has raved about Garcia in particular this season following his performances in the Carabao Cup; both could make the bench with few other options available if Kompany or Sandler do not make it.

Those two were the only academy players to feature, with preparations well underway for the Under-18 Premier League cup final at Middlesbrough on Thursday.

Training squad:

Ederson, Muric, Grimshaw, Walker, Garcia, Danilo, Stones, Humphreys, Laporte, Danilo, Mangala*, Otamendi*, Delph, Zinchenko, Gundogan, Bernardo, Silva, Sterling, Foden, Sane, Jesus, Aguero.

*Not available for selection.
