Man City unveil new 60s-themed black and red striped away kit

Manchester City have unveiled their new away kit for the 2022-23 campaign, with the reigning Premier League champions paying homage to their iconic red and black strip from the late 1960s and early 70s.

The red and black diagonal striped shirt has been designed in tribute to the classic kit made famous by City's FA Cup-winning side in 1969, which saw them go on to win League Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup the following year in what was one of their most successful eras.

The Puma strip is finished off with black shorts. City will debut the kit on July 20 for their pre-season tour of the US in their two friendlies in Houston, Texas and Wisconsin.

The date is also significant given how it falls on the 53rd anniversary of the first moon landing, which saw Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin become the first people to walk on the moon.

With City currently in Houston, their unveiling video saw the likes of new £51million signing Erling Haaland and Jack Grealish model the kit during a visit to the NASA Space Center.

City revealed how the kit is based on the design conceived by the legendary Malcolm Allison, which featured red and black vertical stripes rather than diagonal ones City have gone with this year.

City have said of their kit: 'The new strip, which features diagonal red and black stripes, is inspired by the shirt worn during a golden period in which we won the 1969 FA Cup and the 1970 League Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup.

'That kit, which was conceived by the legendary Malcolm Allison, featured red and black vertical stripes and earned iconic status after being worn in the final of all three of those memorable triumphs.

'Puma have now reinvented that classic shirt for Pep Guardiola's side.'

City last donned black and red stripes back in the 2011-12 campaign, with Sergio Aguero, David Silva and Vincent Kompany the main stars to wear the kit a decade ago.

It's not the first time City have gone with a throwback kit, either, and seems to be a running theme this season.

Earlier this summer, City released a sky blue home shirt with a centralised badge, titled 'the King' in honour of their legendary player Colin Bell.
