Manchester United fans have voiced their displeasure after defender Phil Jones was handed a new four-year deal by the club.
The England international centre-half, 26, has featured regularly since interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over at the club and was rewarded with a new contract on Friday.
However, a number of supporters couldn't quite understand the club's thinking, taking to social media to express their concerns.
'Well this has ruined my weekend,' wrote one while another simply replied to United's official tweet with 'banter club'.
Some went a little further with their damning assessment of the news with one posting: 'A new four year deal for what exactly? How are these mediocre players still at the club, truly embarrassing.'
'Sincerely hope this is just to get value when he is sold SOON! tweeted another. 'No offence but he will be fit for about 12 games in that four years.
United have the option to extend the new deal by a further year if they wish. His existing contract was set to expire this coming summer.
Jones said: 'I am delighted to have signed a new contract. Manchester United has been a big part of my life for eight years and I love everything about this club.
'I am excited about the challenges that lie ahead of us as we prepare for a very busy period in the season. I would like to thank Ole and the coaching staff for their continued support in my development.'
Solskjaer said: 'Phil knows what it takes to be a Manchester United player, he has won the Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League and is now one of the senior players within the team.
'He is coming up to his 27th birthday and entering into his prime years as a centre half. We are delighted Phil has committed his future to the club.'
Jones has played 208 times for United and scored five goals since he arrived from Blackburn Rovers in 2011.
That time has seen him win the Premier League, the FA Cup and the UEFA Europa League.
Jones is the third United player, after Scott McTominay and Anthony Martial, to be given a new contract since Solskjaer replaced the sacked Jose Mourinho in December.
