Paul Scholes has claimed his knee is 'f*****' after playing Soccer Aid for England on Sunday - but scoring another goal at Old Trafford made it all worth it.

Scholes, 48, etched his name into Manchester United's history by scoring over 150 goals in more than 700 appearances for the club across two decades.

Ten years after hanging up his boots in 2013, he returned to Old Trafford as part of the England team which took on a World XI at Soccer Aid, raising funds for Unicef.

The ex-midfielder also rolled back the years with a stunning strike from distance for England in the second half at Old Trafford - before being forced off with injury.

On Instagram on Monday, Scholes wrote: 'Knee's f***** but couldn't give two s****... nothing will ever give me a better feeling than playing in front of a full house at OT and scoring a goal.'

He added: 'Great couple of days with some very funny people.'

There were also two red hearts to show his appreciation for the cause, and the club.

While Scholes had put England 2-1 ahead in the match, the opponents scored three late goals to edge out the fixture 4-2 in favour of the World XI.

Man United legends Nani and Patrice Evra were part of the opposition which faced Scholes on Sunday night, while Gary Neville was in the England colours.

Before the Sunday evening kick-off, the Man United legend took to Instagram fuming about the flags handed to spectators at the Soccer Aid event.

Fans had blue and white colours, in the palette of the charity Unicef, but it made it look like a sea of light blue more commonly associated with Manchester City.

It was unfortunate timing that Soccer Aid took place less than 24 hours after Pep Guardiola's crosstown team sealed the Treble - matching the feat of Scholes and his colleagues in 1999.

Despite Manchester City's dominance this season, it has also been a promising campaign for Manchester United in their first under the leadership of Dutchman Erik ten Hag.

Scholes said that the new gaffer was 'no nonsense' and had significant success in 'turning around' a side who had struggled in recent seasons under a series of underwhelming leaders.
