Man United miss out on top defensive target as South Korean Kim Min-jae completes £43m move to Bayern Munich from Serie A champions Napoli

Bayern Munich have completed the signing of South Korean defender Kim Min-jae from Serie A champions Napoli on a five-year deal.

The 26-year-old enjoyed a startling single season in Italy, helping the Neapolitans to their first league title in 33 years.

Erik ten Hag's side had long held an interest in the commanding defender but the German champions moved swiftly to secure his services.

Kim, who was named Serie A Defender of the Year last term, was presented as a Bayern player on Tuesday and said it was a dream to sign for the Bavarian giants.

'FC Bayern is a dream for every footballer,' he told the Bayern website. 'I'm really looking forward to what's to come in Munich. It's a new beginning for me. I'll continue to develop here.

'In discussions with the club, it was made clear to me from the start how interested they are in me. My first goal is to play a lot of games. In addition, I want to win as many trophies as possible.'

Kim made 35 league appearances in 2022-23, as well as a further nine during their run to the Champions League quarter-finals.

He also started three of South Korea's four group games at the 2022 World Cup.

Thomas Tuchel's side reportedly triggered the player's £43m release clause to bring him to the Allianz Arena and have signed him up to a wage in the region of £8.5m to £10.5m per season, according to Sky Germany.

The centre back will compete with the likes of Matthijs de Ligt, Dayot Upamecano and Benjamin Pavard for a starting berth and will wear the No 3 jersey.
