Manchester United won a five-goal thriller against Southampton thanks to a timely intervention from Romelu Lukaku.
Match Report
Two goals from Romelu Lukaku secured a thrilling 3-2 win for Manchester United over Southampton that lifts them back into the Premier League's top four.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side looked to be heading for a fourth home game in a row without a win in all competitions after James Ward-Prowse converted a superb free-kick.
United, who lost Alexis Sanchez to injury, had overturned Yan Valery's opener through Andreas Pereira and Lukaku only to see the lead slip away.
But Lukaku's emphatic finish in the 88th minute was enough for all three points, even though Paul Pogba missed an injury-time penalty.
Match Events
2' CLOSE! Lukaku's shot saved
What a brilliant stop by Gunn, who turns Lukaku's low drive past the far post for the first corner of the game.
26' GOAL! Man Utd 0-1 Southampton (Valery)
WHAT A GOAL! Wow, where did that come from?
Austin rolls the ball out to Valery, who is charging down the right from his wing-back berth. And the Frenchman strides forward, before unleashing an unstoppable piledriver from 30 yards out for his first goal for the club.
40' Another chance missed by Man Utd!
From a corner from the right, Smalling heads the ball on to the far post where it seemed certain Rashford would equalise. But the forward just cannot twist his body to turn the ball over the line from an acute angle.
53' GOAL! Man Utd 1-1 Southampton (Pereira)
WHAT A GOAL! Wow, United are now back on level terms with a goal to match Valery's.
Dalot releases Pereira and the midfielder then curls a sensational effort into the top right-hand corner of the net for his first-ever Premier League goal.
59' GOAL! Man Utd 2-1 Southampton (Lukaku)
It is that man Pereira who is involved again as the midfielder's clever pass releases Lukaku in the box.
And the Belgian striker then does brilliantly to curl a low shot into the far right-hand corner of the net for his third goal in his last two games.
75' GOAL! Man Utd 2-2 Southampton (Ward-Prowse)
Another absolutely brilliant strike on an afternoon of wonder goals as now Ward-Prowse curls that free kick up and over the wall and past a stranded De Gea for his fifth goal in his last eight games.
89' GOAL! Man Utd 3-2 Southampton (Lukaku)
INCREDIBLE!! After some slow build-up play, United work the ball to Lukaku on the edge of the box. However, the striker still had a lot of work to do to beat Gunn with a shot into the far corner of the net.
93' Penalty Miss! (Pogba)
PENALTY TO UNITED! Armstrong brings down Rashford in the box and that is a penalty...
MISSED! Wow, Pogba goes straight down the middle and Gunn's outstretched leg keeps his shot out.

I know pogba is supposed to take penalties ...but this time Man! Our Rom ..Lukaku deserved it ...Pogba should have given him ...as it could only him develop more confidence in Man U shirt ...because he is on a Roll when we need him the most! Scoring with his weak foot ...is just great to see him even do that!! Allhailtherom

That wasn’t done in a easy way but still the job is done with fantastic goals from Lukaku and Periera, loosing or drawing would have dropped points giving advantage to Arsenal and Chelsea but still this united fought never gave up...and it paid off The good thing about this United is every single player has improved with Ole... Periera scored a stunner and Lukaku Scored perfect timed 2 goals...Pogba had a good game over all after seeing him on that penalty spot he really looked tense and that made him miss the penalty....doesn’t matter United won got 3 points and that’s all that counts Hail Ole...

For everyone who is saying Pogba was being selfish, it doesnt work that way, Pogba is designated penalty taker so he is authorized to take the penalty on teams behalf, its not like Lukaku and pogba were fighting for the ball. Weird penalty though and amazing save.

I can't believe this was the same team that were been defeated week in week out under mourinho they look like a completely different team they are scoring goals for fun nowadays.. Romelu lukaku has regain his form and looks unstoppable in the last few weeks. Sanchez needs to leave manchester united in order to regain his form elsewhere because it looks like it will just not work out for him at united. I don't think I need to tell ed woodward to give ogs the job permanently. .

All I can say, Pogba is selfish and greedy. Why young is nothing but a wasted and coward player. He cause us the 2 goals. Big big thumbs up for Lukaku. He save us today.

This match got me paralysed golazo after golazo I wish lukaku got his hat trick that was selfish of Pogba cause I think he wanted to score just to hide the fact that he didn't have a good game Ultimately 3 points and top 4

Ashley Young should be dealt with, he keeps on committing needless fouls, Valencia or Dalot should replace him in the starting lineup, he is so annoying.

This ManU will go unbeaten in the league till the remainder of the season. Haters screenshot this for future reference! The hunger to win is greater than the hunger of not losing thats been hovering above old trafford for the past four years now!!! GGMU

If I have to vote for player of the week, Now I would surely 100% go for Lukaku. If pogba was Messi for that moment, he would have given for Lukaku to grab a hat trick. Good game it was.

Nice game from all players that participated in the game today but I see a very stupid immature Pogba for not allowing Lukaku to take the penalty. Nice game from Dalot, he changed the game

Thank you lukaku for proving your doubters wrong again. i always say it that lukaku is the best finisher we have unlike lazy and selfish rashford; he only needs to work on his 1st touch.but his energy and determination is unbelievable. ole' stubborness of prefering brainless young to dalot will cost us top4. southon deserved a penalty on stupid young foul on redmond. But still,:his stupid foul allowed southon to equalize. Pogba should leave the penalty to lukaku to score hat- trick and he needs to improve as he has been poor since the psg game. pereira needs a new contract, he is better than fred

After all the criticism on lukaku by me and so many other people he has been able to prove doubters wrong. A match that was full of classy goals was won by a classy striker. 4 goals in 2 games. I still think pogba should have given lukaku the penalty so he can complete his hattrick. Pure class. A man winner. And lukaku isn't fat he has six abs

I know I used to to criticize lukaku we all did but this was a spectacular performance. 4 goals in two games lukaku is truly a wonderful striker and has managed to find his touch.this was a match of wonderful goals but o my lord! Lukaku stole the show. He saved united in a moment of need and in a million years I wouldn't have imagined that. Lukaku looked like he had the touch of cr7 and not just his touch but his physique too. Looks like he is hitting the gym.

United was just incredible today and they brought that feel good spirit to the whole fans I am so happy Lukaku is finding his goalscoring form back (4 in two matches) Pogba wanted to continue his scoring and/or assisting streak but ultimately fell short Preriera and Dalot are huge talents but still need more experience and game time Sanchez is a lost cause now and is no good to united (we've given him enough playtime to show he still gat something but he has none left) Southampton played like a huge team tonight and their goalscoring ability made me fear till the final whistle Rashford needs to grow up and step up in big or difficult games OGS is man u born and bred and he is the right way to go All In All, United All The Way

Idk why this is a point of celebration for United fans, if I was a United fan I would have condemned my team for being on the back foot at home and down a goal to a near relegation team. This was a narrow win and if United get someone tougher than Southampton with all their injuries they're screwed.....
