A hat-trick from Bruno Fernandes helped Manchester United get their Premier League campaign off to a flying start with a 5-1 victory over Leeds United on Saturday.

The full-capacity Old Trafford crowd were whipped up into a frenzy by the announcement of the Raphael Varane signing, with the Frenchman being presented on the pitch just before kick off, and they were then treated to a stunning performance from the home side, on a day when Paul Pogba also caught the eye with four assists.

The home side broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark, as Pogba picked out Fernandes with a beautifully weighted pass, and Illan Meslier was unable to keep out the Portuguese midfielder's fierce left-footed strike.

Shortly after the interval the scores were level, as Leeds right-back Luke Ayling surged towards the Manchester United area before lashing in an unstoppable effort beyond David de Gea.

However, the home side were back in command four minutes later, as Pogba played another delightful through ball to Mason Greenwood, who fired a left-footed shot in off the post.

Two minutes later the score was 3-1, as Pogba found Fernandes, who cut back onto his left foot before firing towards goal, and his shot was adjudged to have crossed the line.

Bruno Fernandes completed his hat-trick five minutes later as Victor Lindelof played him in with a long-range pass, before the midfielder drilled a powerful effort into the roof of the net.

The rout was completed after 67 minutes, with Pogba once again the architect, as the Frenchman's inviting cross was thumped home by Fred.

Manchester United's perfect day on the pitch was made even better as Jadon Sancho made his debut late on, as the Red Devils got what promises to be an exciting Premier League campaign off to a brilliant start.
