Man Utd 'eye Tottenham midfielder Dier' as replacement for Matic

Manchester United are weighing up a move for Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier as they look to upgrade on Nemanja Matic.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to build a British core at Old Trafford as he looks to put his stamp on the squad.

Matic’s form dropped off after a promising start to life in Manchester following his move from Chelsea back in 2017, with the Serbian now out of favour and struggling for regular appearances.

The Times report that Dier is one of the options being considered by the Red Devils hierarchy, alongside West Ham midfielder Declan Rice, but United believe Spurs would be more willing to do business for their man than the Hammers.

Dier was linked with a move to the Theatre of Dreams back in 2017 when Jose Mourinho was at the helm, but has since fallen out of favour in north London due to injury and poor form.

The England international only made 18 Premier League appearances for the Lilywhites last time out, with Mauricio Pochettino favouring Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko as his midfield pairing.

United have been forced to reassess their summer transfer plans as a result of their failure to qualify for the Champions League, with moves for former targets Jadon Sancho and Matthijs de Ligt now out of the question.
