Social media has erupted with memes poking fun at Manchester United after their game with Liverpool was called off following a break-in by angry supporters.

Manchester United's highly-anticipated Premier League clash with bitter foes Liverpool on Sunday was postponed as supporters of the former made their feelings known towards the club's hierarchy.

United fans broke into the stadium and invaded the pitch in protest at club owners the Glazer family, while outside the ground bottles and barriers were thrown at police officers and horses.

The mass protest at the Theatre of Dreams saw over 1,000 protesters outside Old Trafford - with many managing to breach security and storm the pitch itself.

The fallout of the incidents has brought many mixed feelings but there were many on social media who made light-hearted fun of the events.

Comedian Paddy McGuinness joked that United's security were characters from hit sitcom Phoenix Nights - which starred Peter Kay and himself.

Within that show the pair played two bouncers called Max and Paddy and the 47-year-old teased that they were part of the security out at Old Trafford.

McGuinness wasn't the only one laughing at the ease that Red Devils supporters go into the stadium on Sunday.

One Twitter user compared their security to a single gate in a wide-open field - therefore indicating that they were virtually non-existent.

Despite the events all circulating around United, it wasn't just them who bore the brunt of jokes.

Arsenal sit ninth, seven places below United as well as 18 points worse off. Their defensive efforts have played a major part in this disparity and this was mocked by users on social media.

'The security at Old Trafford,' wrote FootyHumour as they uploaded a picture of Arsenal quintuplet Kieran Tierney, David Luiz, Rob Holding, Granit Xhaka and Ainsley Maitland-Niles - with the latter now currently out on loan at West Brom.

United's top-four rivals Chelsea were also caught in the firing line as Timo Werner was also mocked.

Werner has endured a difficult debut campaign at the Blues following his Β£53million switch from RB Leipzig last summer - often appearing goal-shy and wasteful when in front of goal.

And as fans ran amok upon the Old Trafford surface won fan was compared to Werner after struggling to dribble the ball.

In a short seven-second clip, the supporter stumbles with the ball as Footy Fooligans wrote: 'Timo Werner has been spotted in the pitch invasion at Old Trafford!'
